the second spouse pays a high marginal tax rate for starters.
then, if you have kids, child care is expensive.
finally, there's so many conveniences parents pay for when both work and then have to take care of kids. sending laundry out, restaurant food, more frequent house cleaning, etc, etc. it all adds up.
i'd bet if people were honest about it and sat down and really analyzed the costs and benefits, they'd find out that two spouses each making $75k doesn't really provide that much extra income. |

100k may land you in the top 10%, but plenty of those people will be in high COL areas. and xo would also likely state that the marginal difference between 100k and 75k isn't large enough to create two distinct classes of wealth.
it's hard to disagree with that, even if xo is a bit tough on incomes in general (see, e.g., the "Can you raise a child on $800k per year" flame). |

Finally, I don't think you divide income classes using percentages (though they are helpful).
Lower class is probably 40% of country. Middle class probably next 40-50%. Upper middle class top 10% or so. |
