amgs are a prescription for guaranteed pain
if you aren't getting fucked by depreciation, you're getting fucked by repair bills
usually, both
buy a used one, hope it's a good one, and at least you'll minimize the fucking

Don't buy a used 5 Series.
My boomer parents got one for 30,000, and in the past ten years they've spent over 10,000 on maintenance.

Chad: big ass 4x4 truck, big dog in back of truck with tongue hanging out, big boat, chicks in bikinis on said boat drinking canned prole juice and rumchatta, camp fires on the beach snuggled up with Stacy while strumming guitar.
Striverfag: student loan debt, no truck, no boat, lives in studio apartment, no yard so no big dog, drives tiny shitbox "foreign" car that was manufactured in South Carolina, drives with "Titan" the Shitzu dog in front seat, no gf but regularly listens to Stacy getting railed next door while trying to get some sleep for shit corporate job.

It really is model specific, each brand has ones with a minor thing here or there. Generally, nearly every car these days is far more reliable than even 10 years ago. Also, with some models and packages you're buying a car with a ton of power and technology, don't expect that to necessarily be perfect, there are tradeoffs. A 550HP M6 or M5 requires two car batteries, and was designed to deplete them so they could eek out an EPA number (alternator doesn't draw enough to keep them fully charged over time); so there is an extremely expensive battery change bill to expect with those cars as they require 'coding' (((GC))) for each battery. If you don't want that, get a Camry.
As for BMW vs. Audi; if you need AWD, get an Audi with the real Quattro system (not Haldex) and if possible the sport differential. I have an S4 w/ 400whp and no issues at $34k miles; bought it used with 10k and tuned/pully'd from nearly day 1.
If you prefer RWD, BMWs are perfectly fine. I personally like the Audi RS7 and any of BMW's "Grand Touring" 4-door coupes; you can get a 4-door M6 used for ~60k w/ low miles.

Apparently the new model 5 series from this past year is a decent improvement and better than the mercedes E class.
My next car will probably be a sad 4 cylinder 5 series. Or an outback.

it's also not very comfortable driving for over an hour or so.
It's fun and it accelerates well, but I am wondering if I would not have an overall better experience in a much bigger 530i which is cheaper, more fuel efficient, and can go fast enough even with the turbo 4, for 99% of the driving I do with the m240.
Also I share my car with my wife sometimes and she does not drive fast at all, wasting the 240.

Turbos are SPS unless on a diesel.
None of these new turboed cars is going to last for shit without major repair bills. Between direct injection and turbos they are all ticking maintence bombs.
What’s left that is not direct injection and/or turbo? And rule out any CVTs or dual clutch or too many speed autos. Whatever it is, but that. Manual trans and nornally aspirated, normal injection (superchargers are ok though).

TDs break too.
I'm fine with the new auto trannies.
But yeah, there are basically no cars fitting your description anymore.
