Depends on how much you drive and whether you want to deal with the hassles that come with leasing.

I will say that buying used and trading for used tends to work out cheaper than leasing new and trading for new.

Leaving an A6 or 5 series is expensive as fuck. Figure $700/month once you factor in taxes and fees. Their advertised leases include huge required down payments. Over 4 years you'd spend over $30k on lease payments and have zero to show for it. After 4 years of ownership of a purchased CPO, you would probably save at least 10k, factoring in the value of the car at trade in.

A base 5 series is advertised at $540/month including a $3500 down payment and not including any taxes or additional fees. Easily $700/month with zero down and including taxes and fees.

If you're owning an older BMW covered by a pretty decent factor warranty, how much risk is there? You're picking up a basically new car with less than 30k miles.

I checked on ebay and there are plenty of perfectly reasonably priced shit on brakes and such. Cheaper than Porsche, for example (one thing that scared me off the Macan Turbo).

Compared to the performance parts I buy for my Jeep it is largely the same stuff anyway.

It's probably somewhat year/model specific. Maybe get a consumer reports subscription where you can actually see reliability by year/model and specific car component.

Though some base or near-base midsize German car from a few years ago would still get gaped off the line by a Camry

Actually, I don't want flash at all. It's just that mid level class German cars drive so much better at highway speeds and are so much more comfortable than a comparable Camry or accord.

Older 5 series like the E60 I believe we're pretty unreliable. The F10 seems more reliable, although that probably depends if you get it in poverty spec with less to go wrong.

Tbf, I do all my own maintenance on my current cars. I.e. Pads, rotors, fluid changes, oil, tire rotation, filters, minor repairs like sensors. I say this that if you don't do your own DIY maintenance and minor repairs, I'm not sure it would be wise to own a German car.

A lot of that stuff is also perfectly fine to do at normal shops. You get eaten alive if you do it at the dealership, so don't do that. Sure, the dealership will tell you that you couldn't possibly get new tires at Walmart but they're fucking liars and tires are tires.

The aftermarket warranties that you can negotiate be included on CPO cars (since they are 90% margin) are 180 and way better than factory warranties too.

My friend bought a CPO Mercedes that was under a year old with a 5yr unlimited-mileage warranty thrown in. The car has been in the shop so many times before it was even 2 years old that the warranty has paid off big time.

It really is model specific, each brand has ones with a minor thing here or there. Generally, nearly every car these days is far more reliable than even 10 years ago. Also, with some models and packages you're buying a car with a ton of power and technology, don't expect that to necessarily be perfect, there are tradeoffs. A 550HP M6 or M5 requires two car batteries, and was designed to deplete them so they could eek out an EPA number (alternator doesn't draw enough to keep them fully charged over time); so there is an extremely expensive battery change bill to expect with those cars as they require 'coding' (((GC))) for each battery. If you don't want that, get a Camry.

As for BMW vs. Audi; if you need AWD, get an Audi with the real Quattro system (not Haldex) and if possible the sport differential. I have an S4 w/ 400whp and no issues at $34k miles; bought it used with 10k and tuned/pully'd from nearly day 1.

If you prefer RWD, BMWs are perfectly fine. I personally like the Audi RS7 and any of BMW's "Grand Touring" 4-door coupes; you can get a 4-door M6 used for ~60k w/ low miles.

it's also not very comfortable driving for over an hour or so.

It's fun and it accelerates well, but I am wondering if I would not have an overall better experience in a much bigger 530i which is cheaper, more fuel efficient, and can go fast enough even with the turbo 4, for 99% of the driving I do with the m240.

Also I share my car with my wife sometimes and she does not drive fast at all, wasting the 240.

i fit in the car fine. lots of space in the front seat and lots of headroom (more than the mercedes C class).

The problem is that the seats are so close to the ground that you legs stick out straight more than bend. This is uncomfortable for the ass and hips at any height. Same deal for my wife who is pretty short.

$7k is nbd, especially for you. I've never regretted getting the more powerful engine. Seems better than paying a bunch for a car that's inadequate. Pay the money, maintain the car, keep it for a long time and enjoy.

For the other car that depends on a bunch of variables, including whether you are having kids, how you'll use it, etc.

Turbos are SPS unless on a diesel.

None of these new turboed cars is going to last for shit without major repair bills. Between direct injection and turbos they are all ticking maintence bombs.

What’s left that is not direct injection and/or turbo? And rule out any CVTs or dual clutch or too many speed autos. Whatever it is, but that. Manual trans and nornally aspirated, normal injection (superchargers are ok though).

Subject: My Audis have been reliable

I've owned two new A6 Audis - a 2001 2.7T that I kept for 11 years because I liked it so much, and a 2013 A6 3.0T. I had only very minor problems with the 2.7. The 3.0 has been totally trouble free for 5 years, and is without a doubt the finest car I've ever owned. I also have a 2012 BMW 335i convertible I bought used two years ago. It stays at my winter place and doesn't get used much. It had some initial issues with oil leaks, but other than that it has been fine. Before the 2.7T I had a Mercedes E320 purchased new. It had a lot of problems over the 5 years I owned it, and kind of soured me on the M-B brand. The least reliable cars I've ever owned were a Chrysler Concorde and a VW van. Every high end car is a depreciation disaster. If you do buy an Audi, I recommend Audi Care. It's a prepaid maintenance program (not a warranty) that will save some serious $ over dealer prices. For example, the dealer price on the 55000 mile service was $1200, but the Audi Care price for both 55000 and 65000 was about $750.

Good insight. Seems later model audis are fairly reliable. I do all my own maintenance myself in accordance with the factory service manual so I really only care about repairs.

Did you consider the 535i when you bought your A6?

Subject: Two follow up questions

1) What was the cause of the oil leak issue with the 335i? Worn out gasket?

2) Even $750 for a 55,000 mile service seems steep. What exactly does that entail?

I've had three BMWs and never had anything seriously go wrong with any of them.

Anyone drive the new CTS? It's a fucking steal to buy a 2015 CPO.
