I ask because I just found an old tape from that year - with current and older stuff both - and it seems long enough ago now for people's tastes to have changed a lot. Were you cooler then than now? Happier?

In a sense my question contains multitudes, because *so much* might (but might not) have changed in a life since then - so many rivers under a bridge, so many memories, so much bliss and regret. And that's just the Soundgarden fans. The pop aspect would only be an aspect of this, but it might help us to see the rest of more clearly, perhaps in a momentary, epiphanic sort of way.

I was happier in that I was younger. I expect we were all younger, though I'm sure that doesn't mean we were all happier. I did think that Parklife was a very significant record then. I am still inclined to think that it was (is?) significant, but I don't *listen* to it now like I did then. I listened to it a *lot*. I had few other CDs (but lots of other things, of course). It seems odd, now, to have played that record so much - but no odder, perhaps, than whatever I listen to now will look in 2024. I shouldn't exaggerate the extent to which my taste (though I don't like the word 'taste', except as the title of that old, endlessly thrilling Ride song) has changed, though. It changes less than most people's.

I like early Ride records now more than I did then. I think I make more allowances for them now.

One extra thought: I think that perhaps I thought that lyrics were slightly more important then than I do now, and that I now think that melodies are slightly more important than I did then. I think I mean: I am more into lyrical simplicity now, and more into melodic perfection, or quality, or effort, or distinction. It's all 'songs', though, isn't it?

Nirvana was the *ONLY* contemporary band I listened to, until I discovered indie rock a couple years later.

I was STRAIGHT classic rock all the time: Led Zeppelin, Stones, Cream, Grand Funk, and a lot of 60s pop/british invasion Zombies, Beatles, Stones, Loving Spoonful, etc.

I remember a song that came out in 1994 that caught my ear was Freedy Johnston's "Bad Reputation," because I thought it was very melodic, compared to what was on Alt Rock radio at the time.

Janet self-titled was basically the only CD I played from 1993-1994

otherwise I constantly listened to whatever radio station played Candy Rain on repeat

too young to own many CDs at this point -- I didn't become a real music consumer until 1996-ish

94 was really a horrific year for music

all I remember was how awful the pop music was at the time

remember that horrible 'reggae' remake of Frampton's "Baby I Love Your Way"? that was like a #1 hit for months.

the original wave of Alt Rock died with Kurt Cobain, and then all of the also-rans started showing up (Green Day, Offspring, Live, and shit like Counting Crowes).

Sorry but any year including the following albums:

Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss

Pulp - His 'n' Hers

Global Communication - 76:14

Shellac - At Action Park

Autechre - Amber

Can't be considered "horrific"

Disagree.

Fade Into You - Mazzy Star was released in 1994, so was Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, Downward Spiral, Ready to Die, Live Through This, Mellow Gold, Illmatic, Wildflowers, Vitalogy and Jar of Flies. I never liked the power pop / pop-punk thing very much, but for those who did 1994 was a big year with the Offspring, Green Day, Weezer, etc.).

Also, while some of the bands you list arguably suck, Throwing Copper, August and Everything After and Under the Table and Dreaming are guilty pleasures from my teenage years.
