My preliminary hypothesis is that the leading cereal in a brand category will have a helpful mascot, whereas the upstart cereal will have a rebellious one. The logic s/b obvious -- if you're #1, you want kids to conform to the current power structure; if you're #2 and wanna be #1, you want kids to rebel.
To test we're going to need data on cereals, popularity, level of rebellion (or are we doing categorical?), etc. Also would be interesting to see whether mascots who were once friendly became "darker and edgier" after their cereal lost its #1 position - did the Honey Nut Cheerios bee start stinging kids to death after Bran Flakes took over, etc. |

I wouldn't really call him conformist or rebellious. Instead, he is a junkie. But if forced into the Procrustean bed of the conform/rebel dichotomy, he's plainly on the rebel side.
This is weak confirmatory evidence of my hypothesis. Trix, a GM brand product, competes with Froot Loops (from Kellogg's). Froot Loops is usually ahead in this competition, and of course, it is rep'd by Toucan Sam, an ur-conformist.
Interestingly, mascots seem to be conformist/rebellious TOWARD the authority of CHILDREN. Hence Toucan Sam directs children to "follow [his] nose," whereas the Trix Rabbit attempts to invert the natural order and acquire Trix by trick, only to be chided "silly Rabbit, Trix are for KIDS!" |
