So you’re saying I should book a round trip to Prague just in case they devalue my miles and then have to go to Prague without my wife rather than wait for some good business travel to tack her on so we can have a mini-vacation away from the kids, however low the value?

You’re forgetting that value is in the eye of the beholder.

No, you could book a speculative family vacation for almost 12 months in the future, then if they redemption rates change, your old rate is locked in. You never HAVE to go anywhere, you can pay a change fee to swap the dates and routing or a fee to redeposit the miles in your account. The difference is if they're locked into a booking you can make changes and keep the old rate in the event of an OOPS!Devaluation.

Have you noticed how absurd parts of the SQ award chart are? For some reason Central America, Mexico and Hawaii are lumped into the same region, and business class flights from that region to S.America are 40k each way.

They're SkyPesos for a reason, it's like 137,500 miles for a ONE WAY flight from NY to Paris in biz. The same flight is 57.5k AA miles, or 57.5k UA if on a UA plane, otherwise 70k. I can fly to Europe in Lufthansa F for 80k SQ miles, and I think 70 or 75k AC miles. LOL @ DL.

It's the same for AA and UA though, if you have any account activity, including something like using a branded airline card it resets the expiration counter, so functionally they never expire. Likewise, AMEX and Chase points that you haven't transferred don't expire. Less frequent travel would make it harder to accumulate as many points, which would make Delta's exorbitant redemption rates even worse on you no? Should look into this more, paying then using miles to upgrade is rarely a good proposition vs. outright award tickets.

United is awful though and AA is moving in that direction. I can get points pretty easily with my credit card, plus free first checked bag.

I've had frequent flier points expire before. I just didn't think about it for a year, didn't fly the airline, and they're gone. Like I get it, you're all about travel, so that isn't a concern for you. But the simplicity of Delta works well for me.

Mostly because I steadily accumulate them but haven't been spending them much lately because with young kids its harder to arrange overseas trips where you can get 4 FF seats on the same plane.

So aside from a couple of short jaunts with hubby sans kids I've only been using them for domestic flights and they are cheap to buy with miles.

What domestic airlines do you fly most?

Was always CO, then UA post-merger. Switched to AA 3-4 years ago when United DESTROYED their award chart. There's no major difference in the TTT quality of US domestic airlines, so I choose based on the award chart, since premium cabin longhaul awards are my priority.

Seriously, a huge percentage of UA flights have some drama IME. Delta is overwhelmingly trouble free for me.

AA used to be like Delta but is moving towards UA. But yeah, if you're primarily interested in rewards and fly the way you fly, then I get what you're doing. I'm just noting that I'm a very different kind of traveler.

used to be 254k AAdvanTTTTTTTage, 250k Chase, 100K Amex

just drained the AA and Amex substantially to pay for two one-way biz/1st flights, NYC hotels, and a transatlantic cruise for my 10 year wedding anniversary (paid for the cruise because of a tax refund LJL)

still have the chase points for booking shit in London on the other end of the cruise
