I know one couple who I assumed was well into their 40's. Slightly chubby wife with a weathered face, obese husband with graying hair. I found out recently that they're only 35.

On the other hand, I met a girl last summer who seemed like she was in the transition from early 20's to mid 20's. But when I talked to her, I learned that she was 34.

I know plenty of other people like both of these examples, as well as people who look like I would expect a 30 something to look. By the 40's, most of the young looking people will probably look middle aged, but in the mid 30's, it seems like there's a wide range of possible appearances.

You're still youngish in your 30s.... if you have decent genetics and lifestyle, you'll look your age or younger. By your 40s, however, almost no amount of effort or good genetics will help you look truly young. Maybe you can stave off decrepitude until 42-43 if you're really genetically blessed and have a clean life, but beyond that, absolutely everyone looks middle aged.

I noticed this about my mother growing up... she looked young for her age until her early 40s and then almost overnight she looked her age

I assume the same thing will happen to me. So ive got 3-5 years of youthful face left and then im going to look old

One thing I will say is that having a little extra weight on your face is key to looking youthful. Being skinny ages you after 30. I find it's better I carry an extra 5 lbs and fill out my face a bit, than be at a perfect weight and look facially gaunt/aged. So, don't go too crazy with your weight loss... it might dampen your lovely youthful glow :)

Agree. Dont worry, im nowhere near my goal weight yet. But i naturally have a thin face. When I was at my proper weight in my early 20s my face looked gaunt as fuck.

That's my case, as well - I have an angular face that looks gaunt at my ideal weight. So, my choices are always to be a tad curvy/above my perfect weight and look less gaunt facially, or have a perfect body and a skeleton-like face. I opt for the former.

The young looking 34 year old that I mentioned was just a little on the chubby side. Not much, but enough to make it look like she hadn't lost all her baby fat. But more than a little fat makes people look old.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying....Past about 30, most women (and heck, even many men) look better 5-10 lbs above their perfect weight. The few pounds make all the difference, and it's not enough to be "chubby"....just enough to fill out a little bit. I'd rather be my current size 4 and look my age/not skeletal facially than be a perfect size 2 and look gaunt/older. Past an extra 10-15 lbs., yeah, the benefits are quickly eclipsed by the aging effects of just being outright chubby/overweight.

I am in my early 30s and look better thin. I think i get skinny fat issues (slight double chin when i talk) above 20 BMI. My face is also too round at that point. At BMI 19 or lower i have a taut looking face and a much more structured looking face.

That's probably a function of your facial type/body shape.

People who have round faces and/or apple-shaped bodies should probably stay thin, since your face won't get angular at your ideal weight, even as you age.

I have a rectangular face when thin but weight makes it rounder.

I have a pear shaped body.

You might not be seeing yourself accurately -you probably look fine at BMI 20 and are just a harsh critic. Almost everyone looks terrific in the 20 BMI range.

Also, you could try weight lifting so that the extra muscle allows you to carry more fat without looking flabby.

(Twink)

10 lbs. water weight is a rounding error, a daily fluctuation for a man >170 lbs.

It is a fine line. This late 20s woman I know who has always had a fat face despite not being fat looks mid 30s due to facial sagging. If you have a naturally fat face, you are subject to more facial sagging, which is aging.

You want just enough extra fat to fill out those wrinkles and give your face a more youthful cherubic look.

The sort of older women who diet and exercise fanatically to try and keep their skinny 20yo body usually end up looking like skeletor because their faces become gaunt.

Is there any way for them to counteract this? Some facial treatment that fights facial fat loss?

You can get fillers but I think that's more a spot specific thing rather than an overall improvement.

If there's some treatment that works to alleviate this it doesn't seem to be being used by the women who choose their body over their face.

Yes, it's called allowing yourself to be 5-10 lbs. heavier than your 18 yo ideal.

Neither fillers nor collagen induction treatments can replicate the supple/full look of a youthful face. As we age , we lose buccal fat, and it is the loss of this fat that largely accounts for the hollowness of an aged face. The only way to counteract this is to gain just a few pounds.

Indeed, it was Catherine Deneuve who famously said "At a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass."

Back to the OP, yes I agree. All 20yo's look youthful but its in your 30s that large apparent age differences can appear based on the genetic hand you got dealt and your lifestyle choices.
