I anticipate hitting 1.3-1.5 net by year end. I also hired a second full time paralegal this year, so my outside services went up significantly (because I'm currently 1099ing them). Starting January 1 I'm going legit and they are both going to be on payroll. We all work out of my house most of the time. Rent expense is low because I pay my friend a very small amount per month to have my name on his office penthouse and use his conference room.

Taking questions.

My throwaway is calishitlawguru@gmail.com if anyone wants to chat off board.

Misrepresentation by companies raising funds through initial coin offerings. A lot of them have promoted their offerings with dubious claims (sometimes made through celebrities like Mayweather or Paris Hilton). Potentially securities or CFTC violations as well.

Any tips for a newly minted shitlawyer? I walked away from biglawl to be a shitlaw king this year.

Gotcha. If you do employment stick with wage and hour class actions. Lots of crazy people think they are being "harassed" at work, but it's usually just their boss is an asshole. Personal injury is way better, you can have a nutjob client and as long as liability is clear the case is good lol.

LOL. You're dead on re employment law. Every person that's been fired thinks they have a great employment case based on some general perceived injustice. What's your strategy when your damages are well above insurance limits in a PI case? Do you ever settle with insurance companies pre litigation?

It's part of outside services. I rarely hire experts though. I work up cases really well and experts don't need to be designated until 50 days before trial. If I have a huge case that needs to be tried, I usually bring in a heavy hitter and they pay all costs and split the attorneys fees with me. It's a win/win.

The average settlement is probably around there (if you factor in all the large and mid size ones), but the most common fee I get is $5,000. That's because most people in California carry the state minimum of $15,000 and I get a third.

They are insane money and almost every employer fucks it up some how. There are so many ridiculous rules in California regarding wage and hour. Here are some examples:

One example: Your wage statement needs 8 or 9 specific pieces of information (something as stupid as employees social), if you don't have it the penalty is $100 per pay period per employee. If you have thousands of employees it could be a multi seven figure case.

Another example: I settled a case for 850K earlier this year when I sued a BMW dealership on behalf of 40 mechanics. They basically were getting paid a flat fee for each repair and not paid for their standing time waiting for the next job or for their training. Under the Gonzales case in California you have to be paid minimum wage at least for all hours worked if you aren't an exempt employee. So the potential damages were seven figures. Case settled 6 months after filing. Longest part was court approval (which took forever).

Being a lawyer is a license to print money if you know wtf you are doing. Not every one will be able to make the kind of money I'm making, because you need a certain type of personality to get a high volume of clients. But every single person on this board could make 300-400k after a few years practicing law if they aren't risk averse.

Being charismatic helps a lot but you can still be successful even if you are not. Complement people a lot, kiss their ass, make them feel special. When you get a case, show the clients you really care about their case. People have huge egos, they don't care if you are autistic as long as you make them feel good.

Excel and google calendar. No practice management software, that's a flame. I scan everything and upload it to dropbox. I have mysms so my office can text all my clients and docusign for esign now for ghetto clients who don't have computers or printers.

I just calendar the 2 year PI SOL at the beginning of the case. Once we file I calendar 50 days before trial for expert designation, and the the trial date. In personal injury there are no case management conferences and you get a trial date at the time you file (which is electronic now).

In Los Angeles, for personal injury cases only, when you file the complaint they give you the FSC date and the trial dates. They are usually about 18 months out from filing. There are NO other court dates besides those two dates. So it is super chill. I pretty much never go to court.

When I go to depositions/mediation, I generally wear jeans and a dress shirt. If it's a really good case I'll wear a suit.

I graduated with almost a 4.0 in law school, was on law review, and order of the coif. But no, I don't get board of making tons of money. I also really love the business aspect of doing PI. The law part isn't that exciting, but I get to talk to new people all day long, so that is pretty interesting. Also, since I am doing fairly well economically, I can stimulate my mind outside of work doing whatever I want. For example, I travel a ton and have been to dozens of countries over the years.

I plan to retire at 40. My two paralegals (who are 24 and 29) are going to start the California State Bar apprentice program in the next month or two. It will allow them to become attorneys without law school. Once they are done, I am going to slowly make them partners. Then around age 40 my plan is to do maybe 15-20 hours a week of business development and admin (basically partial retirement), and have them run the firm. I would keep 33%-50% of the ownership and have significant passive income.
