Have minimal experience but like firearms and want to get more familiar with them. Was thinking of starting with a Winchester because I love the feel. Live in super red state.

A handgun seems like a bad "first gun" because I'm not interested in home defense (6'4" 250, played college ball and do BJJ). Think a long gun would be more appropriate.

Ruger 10/22, USGI sling, Tech sights. Sign up for an Appleseed course.

After that get a Glock 19 or M&P 2.0 and an M&P 15 sport 2 or a Ruger AR556

Nah he should get safe handling, learn trigger control and breathing and sight picture with a 22 rifle under a pro. Polymer handguns aren't the best option to learn on (even though I did), they're a bit snappier for noobs.

see how it feels in your hand, then run up to a few different people in the store/range and stick it aggressively in their face just to see how they react.

I think the modern 9mm semi's are a first good gun choice. Easy to operate, super easy to maintain, widely available parts, fun at accessible indoor ranges, high capacity, solid for home defense, and since you are in a red state, you have the option to start carrying if you want to get CCW.

Any of the big names would be good choices. Glock, S&W, Springfield, CZ, etc.

First off, get a gun suited for your purpose. If you talk to LEO or military, they might recommend a great gun, but it also might be something more suited to being holstered and for duty use (e.g. maybe even w/ gloves on). That's totally different versus what most people need, which is something that can at times be concealed, etc.

Go with a quality brand that feels good in your hand. My first gun was a Browning Hi-Power, probably not best to start off with a single-action, but that thing was sweet as fuck to hold and shoot with.

After the Browning, best to hold and shoot with was a Sig 225. Single stack, great/slim grip, decocking mechanism was first rate. If I was buying today, I'd go for a 225-A1 w/ the nitron slide or a 239 if I wanted to run .357Sig ammo and daily concealed carry.

You can never go wrong with a Glock, I've had my 26 for 20+ years and it's never failed to cycle (admittedly, I don't shoot very often anymore).

Steel frame 9mm is the perfect starter handgun just because the weight soaks up a lot of recoil, and they're universally high quality guns (looking at CZs, Hi Powers, Sig P22x series, shit even a ruger P series).

If you just say a polymer handgun, lots of retards will balk at glock or M&P prices and buy shit like Smith Sigma/SD9, tauruses, or SCCYs and then wonder why their gun is garbage.

Yes, hence my emphasis on buying a quality brand. If you can't afford it, just SAVE and wait longer. There is no reason to go cheap on something as important as a firearm. You can see, feel, and over time realize where the extra $ goes in terms of quality.
