Every country should make Chinese coming for tourism get an extremely expensive visa that requires months of paperwork and interviews, that or just outright ban them.

Because they are all package tourists doing the same circuits through the popular tourist countries you can avoid them by going to more minor sites or countries. So in Italy they have overrun the top 25 sites, in Austria the top 3 and I don't remember seeing them at all in Slovenia.

They were even flooding Edinburgh this summer, I don't remembering seeing too many of them in Slovenia though. I'm glad they don't like party islands or beach party towns since there's nothing for them to take pictures of, so they don't come there.

Yes but Edinburgh is probably the #1 site for that type of tourist in Scotland. They are almost certain to go there during their 1.5 days in the country.

everywhere in Europe has beautiful medieval towns. Slovenia is distinguished primarily by its forests, and forests take front and center in Slovenian marketing.

there's also some cool caves, but, again, should not be your first trip to Europe.

Also some beautiful mountains (the top third or so is after all in the Alps) and famous lakes. The caves are excellent too.

I think we can all agree that a first timer should do more famous places first though.

those mountains are home to one of Europe's last surviving population of wild bears, if I recall correctly

I flew on the Slovenian national airline once and they had a big article about those bears

Not the Alps actually, the bears live in the remote forest areas down south near the Croatian border.

I'm half-Slovene by ancestry and I have relatives who live on the Adriatic coast and in the far northeast right near Hungary.

France, Italy, UK, Spain

It's hard to exclude France. I helped a buddy of mine plan a trip to France earlier this year, and even if you don't visit Paris at all there is a ton of interesting shit to do. Normandy is full of cool shit, Loire Valley is full of cool shit, etc.

I would rank France ahead of Italy, because I think France offers more types of things to do and see than Italy. I can see Italy being completely unappealing to somebody who hates history.

Also when you travel by train you obviously get to see the countryside closer up than flying. If you've never been to Europe then going by train lets you see much more of it and get a better idea of what its like. This is why I like trains and driving more than flying once I am actually there.

It's a city that should be seen. Most cities aren't on that exclusive of a list, and it's a fine first vacation destination. Once you're familiar with Europe, it's easier to then visit less touristy places.

Some people want to set foot in x countries or see y sites in a week. I'd rather plan a few big things, have lists of things to maybe check out, and then be relaxed during the vacation. No need to let an unexpected delay ruin anything, and this way if you happen to meet someone interesting or have something come up last minute, you can enjoy it

this post inspired me to look this up. It is common in many Euro countries. It is based on a common respect for the land and your fellow countrymen. This could never happen in the US. Everyone would take every advantage they can and exploit it wherever possible. It's sad, and this general lack of respect and camaraderie amongst our countrymen for each other underlies many of our problems, and probably portends our demise.

I want to go to Ireland. Some of my cousins are dual citizens and one recently GBTI’ed in a very dramatic fashion.

took the kids to vienna, budapest and bratislava last year. we walked something like 65 miles in 7 days. not the fanciest or most beautiful but there is SO MUCH. Vienna could easily take 3-4 just on the top tourist spots. budapest we only spent a day in but was awesome. bratislava was lame but we got there by a high speed boat which only took like 1 1/2 hours. even that was an experience.

also CHEAP (compared to paris or rome)
