Thoughts? They probably get subsidized health insurance, reduced price school lunches, free Head Start daycare for kids, free health insurance for kids on medicaid, free home internet (means tested), free Obama phone, and with enough dependent deductions and child tax credits, pay little to no taxes, thereby having more take-home pay than someone making 30% more.

What xo’ers haven’t figured out yet is that families who actually save money for their kids college are penalized on the FAFSA (and thus had less disposable funds), whereas this hypothetical family will have spent it all going to six flags and having a lousy boat and will means-test into federal grants for higher education.

USA provides a safety net for ~bottom 40%. 40th percentile to ~80th percentile's excess just goes to creating that saftey net for themselves.

A family that has 0 savings (eg college) because they spent every dollar on hookers and blow can likely get means tested free federal aid but a family that scrimps and saves gets no free money? Great safety net.

that's untrue. fafsa considers income and assets. they'd be penalized for being high income regardless of how much they squandered.

Sorry, my unstated premise was a normal 120,000 family, would not have other means tested subsidies. I was comparing the two without so stating.

If you make more than that and don't have kids, you should be fine... Also it's probably 59K post-tax
