Had a partner rip into me for not knowing every aspect of a particular deal, even though he knew I had never done one of these deals before and offered no training or assistance. Like only an idiot wouldn't know that when assigning an airline lease, you're supposed to get a consent from Skymall 30 days before closing.

It reminded me of another midlevel I used to work with who burned through a number of first years asking them to do diligence, never explaining what they were even looking for or even give them the precedent to read through, and then get mad when this kid who just spent 3 years studying civil procedure didn't know to list that one of the company executives was 61 years old as a risk.

The person in question is a sociopath and knows perfectly well what he's doing. He's getting off on torturing you and making himself look more indispensable than he actually is to his superiors or the client or whomever is following your work. On the upside if you ever go in-house it will be the other way around and just as bad. We train and get trained incessently and the training is often completely useless. Like I have mandatory training each year on Regulation T. I have never worked on Reg T compliance in my life. The training is completely worthless for me but every year I get a 4 hour lecture on Reg T. They do this because the Reg T fucktard has maybe 2 hours of actual work in a given day and they need him to run around training people to justify his enormous compensation.

Plus, the fuckups of junior generate more billables so minor fuckups that are guaranteed to get picked up on the partners review of your work are engineered there intentionally. Even if they end up writing down your billables they still add the partners hours at a higher billing rate and come out ahead. Your incompetence makes them bank. God forbid if your docs are perfect and dont need redline edits. That's hours they cant bill and calls they cant schedule.

They're neurotic crazy people by nature. That's just the type of person likely to survive and thrive in the environment. It's also the type of personality likely to drive up billables (even, or especially, for needless work), such that the firm with such people is likely to be profitable & survive.

There's no grand plan to it.

because their whole lives are wrapped up in believing that attention to mundane detail is important. they gave the best years of their lives, their marriages, and the opportunity to be involved in the children's lives for these details. imagine if they weren't that big of a deal. it's too horrifying for them to contemplate.
