NVH = noise, vibration, harshness
HG = head gasket
FWIW I do think the head gasket problems have been fixed for a while now

I've owned a GC, T4R, Nissan Xterra, Armada/Patrol, and driven extensively a Toyota LC, Tahoe, Tundra, Highlander, CX-7, Pilot, Durango, and X5.
light duty (CUV): Highlander
medium/heavy duty (BOF SUV): T4R, Armada (2nd gen)/Patrol, or LC (if you have the $$).

So you want an AWD car or an SUV?
Price range?
Size needs?
Care about snow/off road ability?

Would go either. Want some ground clearance and need to deal w snow.
Price range is pretty open.
Size -- Anything but the smallest ones (X3, etc)

Ground clearance = not car. Next q is how much you care about performance.
So far, a million options. You can get something that is reliable and boring but has basic "luxury" (Lexus RX, Acura MDX, Audi Q7), or get something like that but cheaper (4 Runner), get the better performing version of that with less reliability (Jeep Grand Cherokee), or go all out and get top performance and good in snow/off road but that will have just ok reliability (Mercedes GLC/GLE, Porsche Cayenne).

Buy a lightly used Land Cruiser:
-Very nice inside and can tackle any terrain/snow no problem. Powerful enough but nothing crazy.
-Toyota takes a lot of pride in the LC and engineers them to last hundreds of thousands of miles in Arab deserts and shit. Build quality and durability are top notch.
-Won't look like a prick to anyone. It's just a Toyota.
-Poor value brand new but can easily save $20-30k used and owners typically take good care of them.
My parents own the pre-facelift current generation and it runs like brand new at 150k miles, no wear on the interior or rattles. Nothing but routine maintenance ever.

MB GLS 550 or GLS 63 is the CR for SUVs and porsche carerra 4S for cars
if you dont want to spend 100K then Toyota 4Runner for SUV or Audi S3 quattro/Subaru WRX/Golf R for cars
lol @ Jeep. shit is going to rattle in couple of years and has cheap interiors.

I picked GLS mainly for the engine. Even GLS 450 is less than 400HP which is meh considering how heavy these SUVs are. So GLS 550 or GLS 63 are perfect
GLS63 with 550HP is UNGGHHHH
if he can wait the new 2019 Porsche Cayenne redesign is INSANE and is going to absolutely PWN everything. that would be my first choice

I don't get it - the GLS 63 is exactly the same engine as is in the GLE 63 except it weighs more and is bigger. The GLC 63 is even smaller and has the newer engine that has less volume but more fuel efficient and puts out the same power. But how you feel about pushing the same power out of a smaller and reliability is up to you.
2019 Cayenne S seems like it might be an ok option I guess: http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/a12114789/2019-porsche-cayenne-here-it-is/
Similar to above, my top concern with that is pushing 440hp out of a 2.9L engine and what that is going to do to reliability.

Bro, you don't know what you're talking about. The GLE is available with the same 577hp engine you're drooling over as the 63 AMG. The 302hp is the 3.5 naturally aspirated.

And again, smaller and lighter car so unless you need a huge SUV, no idea what you would buy a GLS over a GLE.

Here's some good pointers to follow:
Japanese: with the ONLY exception being Toyota, only buy cars/trucks built in Japanese factories. U.S. made jap vehicles (other than Toyota) are SPS.
German: only quality built SUVs are built by MB. No exceptions. Avoid their shit tier FWD CUVs.
Domestic: Ford/GM -- only BOF SUVs/pickups are worth buying. Obviously, avoid Jeep except wrangler. Avoid RAM.
