Make just under 200K* all in comp, some of that going directly to my 401K
I can live a little nicer, sure, but you just end up saving more for retirement which (1) may never happen (2) may be socialized away by the government (3) is so many years from now you hardly care now
so with the extra 50K in my new job, I'm basically putting most of it in a pot that I can only *hope* at the end of my life will be full enough, otherwise life is the same
*realize this is xo where only 400K is "good money"

hack the nicer money and use it to live a nicer life now
don’t compound the grind
what did you used to tell yourself you’d be able to do once you made “good” money?

I admittedly do use it to live nicer now, but it's mostly stupid consumption; a better dinner, a nicer electronic device
every single adviser out there says to "take advantage of compound interest," I just don't really believe we'll ever be able to retire
To me, "good money" was basically necessary before even starting a family or being able to retire, so good money didn't mean much to me other than a next step in life, I never had a laundry list of must dos -- maybe take a trip or two

trips are cool enough
do you fee any more relaxed at 200k?
nicer could just mean not letting the stress and striving block your ability to just be - to just enjoy the things that matter most to you
starting a family seems like tcr if you want things to feel a little less pointless

i always feel like the biggest benefit to making "good" money like $200k vs, say, $50-100k, is that you worry a lot less about the little decisions.
for example, you don't really need to worry if you have already gone out to dinner once during the week and friends invite you out to dinner on saturday. or if there's a concert coming to town that you want to see, it doesn't have to fit in a budget.
understand this doesn't mean you can be a spendthrift, just that you don't have to worry about all that shit.
and if something breaks on your car or in your house and you have to cough up $5k to fix it, you can do that pretty easily. it still stings, but you aren't necessarily worried about getting a loan from the mob to cover you.

You gotta get off the hedonic treadmill bro. It'll just make you crave more and never bring any long-term happiness.
Actual happiness will stem from keeping yourself healthy, cultivating interesting hobbies (which doesn't necessarily require tons of $), and having a family if you want one. From there, good $$ is purely a matter of improving security and creating better opportunities. Don't obsess about it.
