Both Aleezah Rockler and Anthony Harrison are longtime D.C. residents seeking someone with a dry sense of humor and a love of puns. Neither is religious. Both describe themselves as “patient.” Both are in their 40s and childless and have never been married.
But there the commonalities end: Anthony, an experimental psychologist who makes “robot brains more human” for a living, is seeking someone “snarky” and “playful” and “passionate about something.” His hobbies trend toward the dynamic: kung fu, scuba diving, rock climbing.
Aleezah teaches preschool, and her dream date is “a teacher who writes for fun” and “who likes trying new foods and going to the movies.”
Anthony is a data nerd. Period. He approaches everything as an equation to be solved, dating included. “I’ve run the statistical models and watched every single TED talk on online dating,” he said. On numerous occasions he has crunched dating-site info trying to figure out what makes women respond — or not — to his profiles. (He harbors dark suspicions it has to do with his being only 5-foot-6.)
While this obsession makes for fun anecdotes, it also made Aleezah wonder if she was just another data point in some theory Anthony was trying to prove. “I sort of felt like, Okay, am I just a ways to a means of figuring something out?”
Also, when Anthony encounters data that doesn’t fit his model — for instance, the fact that Aleezah might someday want kids (she’s conflicted) — he sees no point in proceeding. “It seems inappropriate of me to waste their time,” he reasoned. (Anthony doesn’t just sort of not want a kid; he really doesn’t want what he considers an unrelatable, environmentally calamitous “giant petri dish.”)
That said, their dinner went smoothly. Aleezah found Anthony “nice-looking” — and, for the record, randomly said she liked that he was about her height. She was also grateful he was chatty enough to carry the conversation: “I tend to be a bit of an introvert, and I was afraid that we’d just sit there and stare at each other for two hours.”
Far from it: “We ran the gamut,” Anthony said of their “really nice” 2½ -hour talk.
They started with jobs. Aleezah found his work on robots “neat” and “intriguing.” (She must have used “intriguing” and “interesting” a dozen times to describe Anthony .) And despite his kidphobia, Anthony knew a bit about the challenges of teaching preschool: “I used to do a lot of research on education theory, so we spent quite a while talking about pre-K education.”
They also talked family: Anthony shared about his mother’s recent death — “I was impressed he was open about that,” said Aleezah — and how his widowed dad had suddenly become a dating machine.
As for hobbies: “She wants to visit all of the baseball parks in the country,” recalled Anthony. “Personally, sports ball of any variety …” He made a dismissive honking noise. He felt similarly about her poetry writing. “That’s cool. It’s a creative outlet definitely foreign to me. I’m more of the glass-blowing, scuba diving, trapeze type.”
After the basics, said Anthony, “we got onto the fun challenges — the meta — of dating in our age range,” especially “the bizarre expectations of a lot of people out there.” His view: “Stop watching the romance movies, people!”
In the end, the fundamentals were simply off. While Anthony ’s a die-hard quant, Aleezah is a more intuitive soul, and she found him “hard to read.”
Plus, there was the swearing. “I work in the military,” said Anthony. “At work, I can’t go 15 minutes without dropping an f-bomb.” For Aleezah, “It was a little bit off-putting to say the least.”
Anthony was a little much for Aleezah in general. “I need somebody who’s introspective and allows me to kind of take my inner self that’s so quiet sometimes and let it shine a little bit,” she explained.
Aleezah described the lack of sparks gently: “He was a nice person to maybe hang out with and try some of these bizarre hobbies of his but not necessarily spend romantic time with.”
“For a blind date it was great,” said Anthony. “For a date where we might have had something in common, it was a--.”

Yeah, this is why I think our future is increasingly single.
In times past, they both would have knocked somebody up by accident at some point, tied the knot, and more or less made it work. In times even further past, they would have married the first person they sorta liked so they would have societal permission to have sex.
But now? Effective birth control and abortion means no accidental pregnancies/shotgun weddings. Both of them are single and would prefer not to be... but they don't want to settle for anybody who would settle for them. So they'll just spend the rest of their lives alone.
We should get them poasting accounts.

He's obviously a douchebag, but why on earth would they pair a guy that is 41 with a 45 year old woman?
At that age, no guy with a decent income is looking at a woman older than he is. She should be paired with a guy in his 60's.

i love the 80iq scholarly analysis that always pops up in the comment section
"i met a woman ten years older and have been married for twenty years!" wow fuck my ass thats great pal!
"maybe if they both compromised a little!" Nope! certain variables dont go below zero, asshole!
"the world of dating is a changing place! thirty seven is the new" Nope! let me cut you off right there, dipshit. its only changing in your fucked up decaying degenerate shitlib boomer brain!
every time i want to feel some empathy for these people and every fucking time they come out right at the beginning with "Im a bitter angry hateful white liberal. conservatives suck!" There's a reason for conservativism. its a state of being that has always existed until you came along. maybe that could offer you a clue as to why your whole bloodline procreated un...til...YOU! (read "you" in a staccato voice like how a ghost would say "boo")
