This is being completely overblown. At most it'll cost someone $7,000 a year.

$500,000 loan is still taxable. Over a $1,000,000 wasn't before. So that's an increase of at most $500,000 worth of a loan whose interests you can't deduct.

At 4% a year that's $20,000 that you could previous deduct and now cannot. At 35% bracket that's $7,000.

It'll go down every year after over the life of the loan as interest becomes a smaller portion of payment.

Bigger issues are:

1) elimination of personal exemptions, which will hurt families with 3 or more kids

2) elimination of state/local income tax deduction

3) capping property tax deduction at $10k, which is only 1/3 of my property taxes.

This plan is a big fuck you to the UMC.

minimal difference for anyone but UMC, benefit to working class. and that's ignoring the fact that the personal exemption phases out for high earners anyway. not seeing an issue here.

Correction: It was a big fuck you to the UMC in California and NY. People in state's without absurd housing costs and state taxes won't be hurt.

And I think all SALT, including both property and income, are included in the $10,000 cap.

Your post illustrates the problem people have with analyzing this: you take one thing that on the surface seems bad, and don't analysis within the framework of bill as a whole, leading to incorrect conclusions like yours with the personal exemptions.

1) You're wrong, SALT is gone under the current bill, the $10k cap applies only to property taxes (which, again, still fucks people in NY/CA.

2) What have I failed to analyze here? The bill removes a shitload of deductions and lowers the brackets by only about 2%. It's obviously going to be a huge tax increase on NY/CA biglawyers.

That’s what I get for taking big lol in a big city. If I would have stayed on the farm and been a city prosecutor I could go home at 5 and hang out with my kids in a 6000 sf mansion that I bought for $500,000. Instead I work all night so I can pay to uber home to the overpriced shithole I rent in the suburbs because any house I can afford in dc has bullets flying over it.

but they'll act like not getting a tax cut on their retardedly ill-advised mortgage is some kind of death blow to their future. and there, ladies and gentleman, is why 'fiscal policy' in this country is a joke. we all live happy, abundant lifestyles if we make living wages in our respective cities. but modestly compromise our BOOMER STYLE retirement la la land real estate retirement stashes? THIS WAR ON WORKING FAMILIES MUST END STOP STEALING MY MONEY AND GIVING IT TO POORS.

can't please them all but fucking LOL at these shit-sniffing self-important lawyers screaming about how they're going under because of a modest shift in tax policy. if your income and equity holdings are at the level where you actually feel this, then you 're supposed to be smart and frugal enough that you can easily weather a change in tax policy that tremendously benefits the middle class, a populist sentiment that this place largely claims to support. instead everybody is screeching to the high hills about MY MONEY while their ugly tiger mommy wives sit around fingering their $23K engagement rings like that was some kind of essential use of resources. there is truly no pleasing these malcontent homos.

"a change in tax policy that tremendously benefits the middle class"

I'd argue that the benefits look modest at best for them. The AMT elimination and the changes to the corporate tax rate will likely result in most of the bill's gains going to certain rich people. As a UMC lib who will inherit lots of money, I would hate an increase in my taxes, but can accept it if those above me pay a higher rate (ex. no Mitt Romney 10% bs) and the tax reform is part of a budget bill that significantly increases spending in infrastructure and scientific research. This bill is obviously nowhere near that.

Say you make $400,000, that's like 1.8% more, like going from 35% to 36.8% marginal rate.

And this is only for first year. It starts dropping fairly quickly after that as interest payments drop. And then inflation starts kicking in and after 5-10 years it really is NBD.

Better way to look at it is just a slightly higher interest rate.

The higher loan doesn't quite work because they are never paying back that "extra" $175,000 principal you describe. It's just extra interest that would equate to that much loan at that interest rate for that year.

That's why higher interest rate is a better way to look at it.

A family making $300,000 a year is at most paying like $30,000 in state income tax (though this seems high even for California when you consider the lower brackets and deductions).

That's like $10,000 less after tax pay since you are losing a $30,000 deduction.

seems like it might be an opportune time to reevaluate whether the state and local taxes behind that 20k increase are worthwhile expenditures

and maybe either ask elected state and local reps about whether the taxes are all that necessary, or else consider moving somewhere that doesn't require 20k in additional payments

if you already have a million dollar mortgage you are grandfathered in. if you dont have one yet you cant really count it as a tax increase since you didn't have this deduction to start with

so the mortgage interest deduction shouldnt really be an issue. its funny nobody is talking about property tax deduction being capped at 10K which is going to be bigger issue

Don’t really care about the mortgage interest deduction. I think we deducted only like $20k in mortgage interest last year. State taxes though was a $50k deduction. We cannot deduct property taxes due to amt, but it is around $15k. The amt elimination is a bit of a misnomer because so many people who normally get amt pwned won’t be once their tax burden is higher due to lack of deductions. Also we fund $5k into dependent care fsa which they want to eliminate.

My family’s looking at about $15k higher taxes per year under this plan. It’s not NBD considering we already pay over $200k to feds and state combined in taxes every year for absolutely nothing in return. Asking for another $15k a year is pretty offensive. Saying stuff like “you can afford it” is what Democrats would say.

I’ve been a republican since I was 20 years old but I thought the entire point of being a republican was fiscal conservatism, and cutting spending, not running up the deficit even further with this tax plan. And oh, thanks for failing at repealing Obamacare.

Well Obamacare is the definition of tax and spend and they couldn’t repeal it because a lot of republicans love the benefits it gives to some of their constitutents. So the party itself is too fractured at this point to hold to its core values.

I understand that politically speaking eliminating SALT disproportionately impacts coastal democrats while not pissing off coastal republicans enough to ever go Democrat. People like me will just take it rather than vote for kamala Harris.
