good god. when I was 15, I went to my first out of state hardcore show - driving through an ice storm to the suburbs of Philadelphia. The same year, I also went to hardcore shows in NYC - surrounded by skinheads and basically street people. Also went to a show in New Haven CT - 10-11 dudes in a single holiday inn motel room while gunshots rang out most of the night outside.

I'd just tell my dad "hey I'm leaving for NYC/Boston/wherever, be back Sunday afternoon" and he never asked questions.

Agreed. He says the big shift happened in 2012 and speculates that it relates to smartphones taking 50%+ of the market share of phones. But the long-lasting impact of ITE wasn't realized by a lot of the population until later, when it was clear that any recovery would not drastically improve the quality of life for most working Americans. I think adolescent issues like depression are closely correlated with household income/wealth instability and the anti-social behaviors that result from that (parental alcoholism, long-term unemployment for dad, mom on pills, divorce, depressed parents etc.).

People of means aren't much better; they turn their kids into neurotic freaks because they are so afraid that their kids will fall through the cracks like everyone else has.

One day last summer, around noon, I called Athena, a 13-year-old who lives in Houston, Texas. She answered her phone—she’s had an iPhone since she was 11—sounding as if she’d just woken up. We chatted about her favorite songs and TV shows, and I asked her what she likes to do with her friends. “We go to the mall,” she said. “Do your parents drop you off?,” I asked

From a Forbes article about the Facebook document mentioned in the Atlantic piece:

Thanks to a 23-page document leak (first reported on by The Australian), Facebook can and will let advertisers pinpoint, "moments when young people need a confidence boost." The document specifies what emotional states Facebook is interested in helping advertisers pinpoint; "stressed, "a failure", "worthless," "insecure," "defeated," "anxious," "silly," "useless," "stupid," and "overwhelmed." Other parts of the document, authored by Facebook employees Andy Sinn and David Fernandez, focused on body image and weight loss describing how image-recognition tools are used on Instagram and Facebook.
