The market has punished and again would viciously punish any state that attempts to avoid debt payments of any sort.

China would trade away a shitload of the debt prior to war to address what little risk there is of that, but more because existing outstanding debt will be less valuable if the isssuer starts to stretch its credit to go to war

The idea that us treasuries offer a risk free rate of return is fundamental to modern corporate finance and is implicitly reflected in the price of every tradable financial asset on the planet. Re-evaluate your question in light of this fact

This is laughably false. I'd go into detail, but basically this:

https://www.amazon.com/This-Time-Different-Centuries-Financial/dp/0691152640

Every country (excluding UK) has effectively defaulted on its debt several times in the last 200 years. It's a regular occurrence.

the only things officially backing US treasuries are "the good faith and credit" of the US. Unofficially, the thing that backs them up is the threat of violence.

i assume you were a humanities or non Econ social sciences major? The implications of such an event for global financial markets, supply chains and trade flows makes it sound like you're asking what would happen if we dropped a nuclear bomb on a major American city to me. The answer is that it'd suck so much that it's not worth considering.

The fact that you're focused on legal formalities and view this as principally a history question is laughable.

I'm saying the hypo is like asking what would happen if aliens invaded like in Independence Day. Some things don't merit a response.

Also I have a special contempt for people (usually lawyers) that think law is more important in the grand scheme of things than it is.

Also, you clicked on a thread title that was clearly about the subject of the post then POASTED in the thread but failed to actually answer. All you've done is bitch.

I don't think you could even hazard a guess.

Agree with you concerning the self importance of lawyers.

I see lawysrs struggle with this in my field. They dont recognize that lawywrs (and the staff officer community) exists to support the warfighters and ensure they can accomplish their mission.

yeah right

The Commanders DEPEND on their Brigade JAGs to keep their asses out of trouble.

Then there are the REGULAR soldiers who get in trouble and the only person who can defend them is the JAG Officer.

lawyers in the military don't "struggle" with recognizing how important they are.

Congrats on your A- in Econ breh but this has happened routinely since the industrial revolution. It would be disruptive at first but within months it would be 180 as manufacturing would come back to the US. The US can support itself with a completely isolationist policy. The markets would crater and the investor class would be up in arms. The average American would benefit though even though they wouldn't be able to buy cheap chink electronics

If the US refused to service Chinese bonds they would be sold and their value would plummet. Value of dollar would plummet so boomers and investors would get hit hard. but US has the capacity to sustain itself without (((GC))) and this would be a boon to the working class

Yep no reason to foresee a cascade of bankruptcies from companies that rely on China for inventory and supplies or become unable to roll over debt, historic capital flight from us denominated assets, a massive spike in treasury yields that triggers higher borrowing costs with its own second order effects, financial institution failures triggered by the instant devaluation of the world's reserve currency and higher oil prices that exacerbates the impact of severely cut economic growth. Only thing to worry about is fewer iPhones.

i give your analysis an (((F)))

Germany became a utopia after butler drove GC out. US can rebuild its manufacturing capacity and get cucknada to let US companies extract its oil and any other scarce resources. LJL at thinking the US is some dependant on China

The US dollar becomes worthless and will lose its status as a reserve currency

China will likely halt exports. Everything that says "Made in China"? Gone. Every other product - including some military technologies, your iphone, That contains components from China? Gone. Over time, we may be able to manufacture some of these technologies in America, but overall this would cripple our standard of living for years to come

The US would be unable to finance government operations as the price of treasuries collapses (rates would shoot up to sky high numbers and interest on the debt becomes 99% of the federal budget). US would have to monetize the debt resulting in a US dollar that is worth a fraction of what it is today. American standard of living collapses. World financial system would collapse; the Euro would become the world's reserve currency. Other countries eventually recover and the US becomes Portugal.

We'd become a command economy dedicated to building tanks, planes and bullets. A lot of paper money would disappear, but our economy would be completely transformed.

We grow our own food and extract our own oil. We would be in a better position than any country was in WW II.

What is this flame. If the US was able to accurately determine which serial numbers were held by Gooks, and only void those T-Bills, there would be no repercussions. I question if the Treasury could actually do that though.

The economy would be fucked while the USA blockaded China. That would cause the recession.
