They interview the guy who already works there and who they are going to give the job to because the rules say they have to interview him/her.

Then they interview a bunch of random outsiders to make it look like they actually considered not appointing the guy they already decided on.

If its purely a promotion from one internal position to another in the civil service then aren't they obliged to consider all eligible internal applicants?

Whether that consideration extends to giving them an interview I don't know. But surely you would have a better idea of how many applicants there are for the promotion in your own agency and its promotion procedures than xo would.

No. If it is someone in the office already (I.e. an attorney) then they just get a grade increase. That crap may happen a lot for other types of positions. It is less prevalent for attorneys. I am speaking from first hand knowledge on this one.

i work for a state agency and this is 100% true unless it's an entry level position, and even then it's probably going to someone who knows someone in the legal department. very hard to get in as a rando unless it's a giant place. but even then, they should have a stable of former and current interns they can call on.

Really depends. 1-2 if a good internal candidate. If not can be a lot. Last one my agency filled we had 8 in for the first round. Cut it to two for the final round.

For the position i got they apparently interviewed ten.

It's a good sign you got an interview. Normally when we have an internal

Candidate we just interview other internals to save the hassle. But no way to tell for sure - sometimes they'll hint at it in the interview, i.e. asking "why do you think you'd be a better candidate than someone who has experience with this agency...."

Oh god, it's crazy. Before I got this job I had 14 big fed interviews. Most let me know if I made the next round (or if one round gave me indications I'd be hired) between ten days and three weeks.

One I interviewed for and never heard back before I got my current job. Four months later they called me back for another round!

The hiring freeze is complicating hiring right now too. Many agencies have to get special dispensation for final hires which is further complicating the process. Add holidays and right now I'd say expect to hear within a month with positive news.

Expect to never hear bad news. Just perma silence.

Btw 14 interviews?!?!?!?! How many applications did you submit? How many offers did you end up getting from those interviews?

I submitted hundreds - I'd estimate 250 or so. And I have good credentials.

I think the final results were 5 I never heard back after the screener, 4 I made it another round but ultimately did not cop an offer, and I ended up getting 5 offers.

So getting that first interview is definitely the hardest part.

Prestigious AUSA position hiring, in my experience, is even more Byzantine than bigfed. Had a buddy get a first round interview at SDNY and they offered him without another interview a year later! Don't know if that is typical.

I got to the second round (actually met the US Attorney) a few years ago in a good district... And I'm still waiting for news lol

I’m through a few rounds (have not met with USA) with a prestigious district (not sdny) who have authorization for numerous hires. Trying to make myself feel better about my chances but I know I’m probably fucked.
