Grants Pass is a terrible. Outside of Ashland and a few other places, most of the population centers in Southern Oregon are hellholes. There are whiskey tango areas down there that are 90% white and still have <60% high school graduation rates.

Lived there when I was younger. It was ground zero for meth epidemic in the 90s,, years before it was full swing in the rest of the country. There's also a weird mix of right wing survivalists who live in the mountains and old hippies who moved from Bay Area after the 60s. Ashland, for instance, has the highest concentration of Wiccans in the entire world. on the other hand, the state was more or less governed by the klan before waves of Californians moved in. I remember hearing news stories about children being abducted every year when families would take their kids to chop Christmas trees. There were rumors of cults, deranged survivalist groups out in the mountains and it was assumed they were responsible. All of this is surrounded by pristine natural beauty. I'm rambling, but yeah...weird place

Crushing poverty from shitlib destroying logging industry coupled with being pwned by meth years before the rest of the country. we had a fam friend who was a school counselor, remember her telling us about these 5 girls who all lived in the same trailer park. All of them had been impregnated by the same guy - a 33 year old deadbeat named "Tuffy". Another girl at the school dropped her baby in a bathtub she was using to cook meth and it died.

I can't stress enough how many hippies, occult groups, fringe right wing groups are out there in the woods. Lots of them have gotten caught up with drugs and are totally off the reservation. When you went to Costco, you'd see these people where it was obvious they only came down from the mountains once or twice a year to stock up on supplies. I'm not usually superstitious, but these weirdo's satanic activities add to the whole regions bizarre energy.

I also knew dozens of people who were churchgoing, normal, and swore up and down to have seen/heard Bigfoot.

there was a gigantic fire in 2002 in an area called the kalmiopsis that torched half-a-million acres:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biscuit_Fire

allegedly, the fire torched so many meth shacks and stashes that regional meth prices spiked for weeks afterwards. i don't know if that's actually true, but there certainly are a lot of meth busts even today down there.

I am sure meth is still rampant but areas like that are now fraught with opioids, from what I have been told. It's bad everywhere but it's a vulnerable region where drug were already deeply embedded in the communities, so they're getting completely savaged by the epidemic because opioids are so much more physically addictive and fatal.

so many oddball hideaways deep in the woods and mountains there. i once chartered a captained boat to take us way up the rogue river. 60 miles in we pull into this rocky cove in the middle of the forest and hike up a mountain. at the top of the mountain there's this enclave of a dozen or so homes with no access in or out except that trail and some 4x4 logging roads. we walk up to this farm / eatery (no sign on the building except "lunch 11-2 F-S") and it's jam packed with locals about to sit down for a family style lunch. the fare that day was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, casseroles, greens, pies and sweet tea like we were in the deep south or something. random as hell finding that subculture on the west coast/pacNW.

a lot of the people who moved west to work in the logging industry were "hilltoppers" from appalachia who did similar work back there, or were making a change of career out of the mines. southern and rural western oregon is still full of hilltoppers and their kids. the topography is even similar in lot of places; here is a photo of an active logging site in the coast range:

https://i.imgur.com/n3by8l4.jpg

that's only a few miles from the pacific ocean, but that hill/valley geography with narrow "hollers" between hills is similar to western kentucky/tennessee/etc.
