My year on the Chase Sapphire Reserve is fast approaching. Should I cancel it to avoid the large yearly fee and cop the uber card? I already have a Preferred but never use it. Should I call Chase and tell them I was to change my Reserve into a freedom account?

technically the chase points are worth more than 1:1 so even though you are getting 4% back on the Uber card for dining you will get more than that redeeming for travel related shit using your CSR points

You still get the $300 travel credit so it's really only $150.... It's not that much spending to cop $150 worth of points.

That said, I may cancel mine next year and do AMEX Plat just to cop the intro bonus.

his problem is that he should not have both the preferred and reserve. the annual fee difference between the 2 is like 60 bucks once you remove the travel credit, but the preferred offers nothing the reserve doesn't.

The reserve has a fraud $75 fee for authorized users which is just ridiculous. I called and asked for them to remove the charge for my wife and they refused. I am considering cancelling.

I've read using points toward travel is a lot more value than having a cashback card. So that alone probably makes it a wash. Then throw in the other perks of CSR if you actually use any of them and it's probably a better value than the Uber card.

CR - do not use chase points in the travel redemption portal. that is just lazy. you can get 4 or more cents per point redeeming for certain travel.

EX: you used to be able to cop an amtrak ticket same day for 4500 points from NY to DC. That would often be like a $150 ticket. Thats like 16 cents a point.

It’s more work to price stuff out and compare whether it’s worth transferring points to a FF or hotel partner but you can get much more value out of the points.

You need a fairly high spend for the points difference to take care of the additional yearly fee between the CSP/Freedom.

It can be worth it if you care about/take advantages of the card perks--travel and rental insurance, lounge access, price matching on purchases, etc.

i don't really travel any more so i product changes into a freedom and opened up a BOA premium rewards card. If you have over 100k with BOA/Merril the rewards are the best out that as far as I can tell.

When you cancel, chase will refund you a prorated portion of the annual fee. Thus, if your annual fee is due in dec, you should use up your $300 travel credit in Jan ASAP and then cancel. Chase will then refund you 10-11 months of the annual fee and you actually come out ahead after factoring the $300 travel credit.

Is it possible? Yes.

That said, Chase doesn't really have a history of clawing back points.

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase-ultimate-rewards/1738798-chase-product-change-card-conversion-downgrade-upgrade-keep-cancel-2016-onward-40.html

May the force be with you!

Having said that, Chase has recently developed new policies to discourage customers from engaging in actions such as this.

From what I've read, many customers intend to do just what you've outlined.

You can downgrade the preferred to no fee regular sapphire. CSR, AFTER $300 credit, still worth it for the priority pass ($90 value) and 1.5x redemption if you still have lots of ur points.
