I'm not quite sure when this faded away, but in the past 10-15 I feel as if it has totally disappeared. As a Millennial, we were born and grew up during the last sputtering breaths of the American Empire. There was a genuine sense things would always improve and that Americans united were essentially unstoppable. We had our differences, but ultimately when we threw our collective weight around, there was no one else who could even come close. In the years after 9-11, this old quiet confidence has all but disappeared. All that remains in its wake is a general feel of unease and sort of a grasping against an inevitable downward trend.
It's trending downwards.
