Was driving through there today and at least two dozen state trooper cars on the road with half of them having pulled someone over.

Why do the residents put up with this?

At least there aren't speed and stoplight cameras, in addition to the state troopers. Maryland is a fucking police state

how do speeding cameras work relative to red light cameras? with red light cameras, presumably 100% of the people who violate get tickets. same for speeding?

and yet, people race around the streets of baltimore on stolen dirtbikes and the cops don't even bother to investigate. it's a very selective and ineffective police state.

because there is a lot of out-of-state traffic passing through. it's easy to hit them up for a quick buck, and use the threat of criminal charges to make them pay quickly. and it works; most DO pay up.

Wrong. They actually defended fining their own citizens more and the Supreme Court said that was fine. There is a SCOTUS case about their traffic laws.

Lived there for years and never got a ticket.

Every state with a major thru-way amps up enforcement on high travel days, like today. Officers presence causes people to slow down, which saves lives in heavy traffic. HTH

cops slow down traffic in in an extremely small zone (nothing on the order of actually making a difference as to how fast traffic is going on average) and a sitting cop is probably a net negative in regards to traffic safety due to increasing the chances of a rear-end when cars spontaneously slow down after thinking "oh shit!"

The two states I've lived in (Cali and Tex) the speed limits are not (usually) enforced at face value. The "real" speed limit is something like 9-10 mph over what the sign says. Is it like that everywhere? I never understood that. Thank.

yes, it's like that everywhere. You will never get stopped going <80 on a 65 highway.

When I was young and stupid I got pulled over on the VA/TN border doing 94 in a 65. I tried to hide it from my parents and just plead guilty by mail and paid like a $900 fine. Years later I find out I plead to a misdemeanor. Oops lol.

Kind of a stupid thing. We were in rural bumfuck and appearing in court to fight it would have been extremely cost prohibitive.
