The alliance is advantageous to us in some ways but also extremely costly both in terms of the huge subsidy we pay them and the political cost we pay in dealing with every other country in the region having aligned ourselves so closely with Israeli interests.

Basically Israel doesn't do anything that advances US interests unless we either bribe them or threaten them.

One of the bribes we had as a card to play was the recognition of Jerusalem.

That was a card we had in our hand and Trump just went and gave it away. Plus it makes life harder for pro-Western Arab leaders who now have to take a more anti-US line to appease their own people.

So he gave away something of value to us and not only got nothing for it but actually damaged the interests of the US.

That was what was dumb about it.

Also the way he did it was typically stupid. Saying "Jerusalem" is Israel's capital is unnecessarily generous and extra controversial because "Jerusalem" by default includes Arab East Jerusalem. All he needed to do was say "West Jerusalem" is Israel's capital.

It also could be that Trump promised it during his campaign and is just doing what he said he would, and nothing more.

It could be that he intends to broker some sort of deal re: Israel, and a raw display of power on his part is how he intends to start.

I don't know, these are guesses. However, I trust that whatever Trump's reason, it's a good one.

Why do we pay Egypt a huge subsidy every year? Why do we support Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States so unconditionally? Why do we have large military resources in those states defending them? Because we have geopolitical interests to advance in the area and the best way to do it is via regimes we can influence with our $$$ and troops. Even the US can't fight a war with every Middle Eastern country at once and if we don't support them then the Iranians or Russians will.

Giving a big fuck you to the Palestinians might feel good for a day or two but it damages US influence with those Arab states we actually do care about.

Everything we do with Israel is the result of some bargain. To get them to do what we want we have to either offer them something or threaten them. That's how the US-Israel relationship has worked since we took over being their patron from the French in the 1960's.
