Do most marriages turn into nightmares?

There's no point in spending your life with someone you'll be constantly feeling annoyed or unhappy with.
Do couples literally just go through that hell to look good to society and their friends and family?
I've heard horror stories in my own family, where my uncles would kick my aunts out of the house in their 20's due to fights and they had to find places to stay. JFC.

She started showing a ton of insecurity issues, gaining weight and accusing me of cheating all the time, despite the fact i was working 70 hour weeks and had no friends in new city and pretty much hated anything and everyone there. I found out she was on a lot more antidepressants and antianxities and other meds than I knew about and was constantly going to doctors. We fought like fucking comanches
She got a job, acted like a fucking martyr having to go in every day, quit after 8 months and went blubbering home to her folks (who were always in our lives and i couldn't stand them) for a week. I decided to make a plan, save some money. Things settled down for a few months but then we started getting at each others throats. We said fuck it, got s separate places, sold townhouse. A month or two in I was drinking less, found a few friends but decided i hated my job and was moving back to CA with or without a jerb and we filed. It was a massive relief to get out despite getting harangued by my mom and sisters with the 'i told you so' bullshit |

That said, yes it is very difficult. You have to get lucky. Modern western (and westernized) women are fucked up and really it's not even their fault. Feminism, social media, ability to work, government safety nets, etc. have essentially made you (the man) kinda useless. They are responding to the incentives they have.
To the above that claim that you have to meet the right one in college otherwise it's not going to happen - i met my ex wife in college. Yet she is now my ex. There is no rule that college is where it's at and it's not going to happen after. People in college are still immature and don't fully know themselves. That combined with the forces outlined in point #2 means some chick you marry in college may turn into something completely different in a few years.
To recap, you need to get lucky. But there are steps you can take to maximize your luck. Try to meet women in the right places - church, volunteering, grad school, etc. Work is no longer an option due to #MeToo. Also seek out avenues to meet foreign women. They tend to be better. Second, give it time. Don't rush in. Take things slowly and give time for the crazy to come out. If after 2-3 years of dating some chick in her mid-late 20s, you haven't seen red flags, you are probably good to go.
