assume you're in one of those sports where there are a lot of medal opportunities...
1) how many silvers would you give up to have one gold. would you rather have 0 gold and 5 silvers than 1 gold and no silvers? [my answer: i'd give up an infinite number of silvers to have one gold]
2) does your answer in #1 depend on an individual or a team gold? [my answer: only applies to individual gold. i'd give up maybe 1-2 individual silvers to get a team gold, ONLY i could still keep at least one individual silver]
3) does your answer in #1 depend on the prestige of the sub-event (e.g., all around, 100m), i.e., would you give up 3 consecutive all-around silvers to get one gold in the balance beam? [my answer: tough one, but probably not. i'd still want the gold]
4) how many bronzes would you give up to get silvers? [my answer: probably none. at that point, # of medals means more.]

Pretty interesting hypo

Answers 1 and 2 go together. I think it depends on the sport. I would give up silvers in one sport if I won, for example, a team gold in like basketball, because the team gold is the highest award in the sport. Likewise, I'd give up silvers in an individual event like diving if I could get a gold in synchronized diving, because that's really a twosome type thing and you and your partner work together the whole way. I'd also give up an individual silver in gymnastics for a team gold, assuming I actually did some of the routines (with bigger squads in the past, you could win a gold without a single one of your routines counting). The team gold can be considered by some to be the highest award in gymnastics.
I would NOT give up individual silvers in something like swimming for a relay gold, because those have weak competition and especially because you can win one by swimming in the heats and not even in the final.
Let me add one caveat here -- I think going to and medaling in multiple Olympics is valuable, so if I went to 4 straight olympics and won silver medals in each, I might actually take that over winning one team gold.
3) does your answer in #1 depend on the prestige of the sub-event (e.g., all around, 100m), i.e., would you give up 3 consecutive all-around silvers to get one gold in the balance beam? [my answer: tough one, but probably not. i'd still want the gold]
No, an individual event's prestige makes no difference to me, especially within the same sport. If we're talking different sports, I might take a silver in the 100m over a gold in like BMX racing though, but I'd really have to think about it.
4) how many bronzes would you give up to get silvers? [my answer: probably none. at that point, # of medals means more.]
I greatly prefer silvers in events that are knockout formats because, having been an athlete, getting to the finals is super meaningful, because you put yourself in a position to win the title. Losing in the SF was always the worst.
But, I go back to my point above regarding number of Olympics. I think I might actually trade 1 silver for as few as two bronzes if those bronzes were won in separate Olympics.

I thought it was all or none.
Yeah, I'd give up some. Would depend on the numbers.
Like, imagine I went to 4 olympics in speed skating and won two silver medals at each. I'd easily trade one silver medal at each games (so 4 total) for a single gold. In that way I'm a champion and I medaled at 4 Olympics.
You'd really have to give me specific hypos I think.

my answer would not change. MAYBE it would change if i set some sort of record, like if i medaled in every single swimming event at the games or something.
over two Olympics I wouldn't trade 5, but I'd definitely trade 2. I'd have to think about 3 and 4.

I wanted to be an Olympian so badly when i was a kid :(

interesting.
are there certain other prestige events where you'd rather have an individual silver over an individual gold in a less prestigious event?
would you rather take a silver in the 100m over a gold in hurdles? silver in decathlon over a gold in the discus or something?

do you feel the same way about the decathlon as the individual AA title?
i feel like the AA and decathlon are premier events.
not a swimming mfe, but is an IM more prestigious than any stroke event?

i'm with you but, ITT we're not talking about objective exchange rates and inherent value.
this is all very subjective and emotional, and you've got to put yourself in the shoes of someone like michelle kwan.
objective exchange rates aren't so relevant bc they dont consider how many of each medal you'd already have. if i already had 1 olympic gold, i'd definitely rather have 3 worlds than an additional gold. if i didn't have the 1 olympic gold, i'd definitely take the gold over 3 worlds.

you underestimate kids.
they know what it means to be a WORLD champion.
and besides, we're talking about 3+ WORLD titles, not a 1-1 comparison. we'd all take the olympic title when comparing 1-1.

olympics also have a slight bump bc you have fewer opportunities to win them. scarcity = prestige.
but due to injuries/randomness/birth year, it's a bit unfair that different people have more or less opportunities to win olympics.
making up numbers, but for a gymnast if you're 16 in an olympic year, you have an opportunity at 16 and 20. if you're 15 in the olympic year, your only shot is when you're 19. kinda unfair.

yes, and also staying with women's gymnastics there's probably a year or two in everyone's career when they are at their peak. if it falls in between olympics, too bad!
i remember that happened to a wrestler, Les Gutches. he was NCAA champion in 95 and 96, made the olympic team in 96 with very little olympic level competition and didn't medal.
went on to crush everyone in the 97 worlds, but then had injuries and never was able to get an olympic medal. dude was off by 1 year.

in some respects i think the more wc golds you get the more you "miss" the olympic gold.
that said, i don't think that changes how many i'd trade, and i think 2:1 is a good ratio.
3+ world championships and you start to get into the upper echelon of the sport.

Unless I had an insane # of silver (like 15+) I'd give them all up for ONE gold; even with 15+ I'd still give up 5-10 for 1 gold
If I had bronze I wouldn't change any for silver because no one distinguishes between 2 and 3, only 1 and everything else

cr.
here's another point i was thinking of: is there any prestige to medaling in a bunch of events that show extreme athletic breadth?
in other words, imagine a hypothetical track athlete who wins silver medals in the 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 5,000 and 10,000. Medaling in all those events will never, ever be equaled, and there's some value in that. Would you trade that accomplishment for a single gold in the 800? Which of the two accomplishments is likely to be more famous 20 years after the fact?
