Fake news deliberately misinterpreting what he said. They pretend he said "America was great back when we had slavery." Actually he is just making the very defensible point that even though America has never been perfect (eg, we have the stain of slavery), America was great when people wanted what's best for the country instead of this factional tribal bullshit.
