If it also helps the wealthy then so be it... Any benefit to them will be considered "disproportionate" by people like you because they already pay 95% of the taxes.

The dems started proposing bills to get rid of it back in 2007. Obama was behind it and virtually all of the dem caucus wanted it gone. After '08 they lost a lot of time trying to pass ACA and trying to woo a few GOP votes to ACA, which required them to back down on eliminating it (they ended up not getting a single GOP vote for ACA anyway). Then they needed GOP Sen Scott Brown's vote to pass the financial reform bill so again it got shelved. Then they lost the House in 2010.
You could definitely say they didn't prioritize it versus other items on their agenda (ACA, Financial Reform, stimulus bill). But you can't just ignore the GOP's stated position on it and the fact that the GOP has fought hard to protect it. |
