I wouldn't call Trek hard sci-fi, but it is more rich and interesting. Star Wars is really mythological fantasy, a variation on the Hero's Journey. Trek is like a genre unto itself.

S2E2 of the Original StarTrek where Scotty hits on the female officer and asks her out for coffee is the most 180 scene in the whole series because Kirk and Spock then proceed to defend sexual harassment in the work place. I was watching it on BBC America not two hours ago. That shit would never in a zillion years get on TV today.

Spock is the GOAT scifi screen character, but that's not enough

TNG and Deep Space Nine were more interesting and engaging than anything Star Wars. The only thing Star Wars really has is The Empire Strikes Back, and that was a great movie almost by accident.

No and it's aged horribly. The Caradasian episodes were the worst and the Klingon civil war arc was just laughably absurd.

ESB is better than any Trek, though. It's hard to compare a show to movies, at any rate

Remember how they gave the DS9 crew a space ship to zip around in because the show was so boring, just sitting there on a space station?

Wasn't boring, show was well written and intriguing after the first couple of seasons. The space station concept was neat and I like the darker tone. Might have been the best Trek overall.

I find Star Wars kinda boring because you always know the general arc is going to be "underdog hero faces conflict > hero has intense moment of doubt and strife > hero overcomes adversity and saves the day". In DS9 you had all kinds of economic and political intrigue combined with speculative concepts and good old pew pew laser battles.

For all the shitiness of all the Star Wars movies (aside from the first two that are legit classics) the Star Wars novels are 180 as fuck. TNG novels are all universally shitty.

Novels aren't even canon. Whatever happens in a novel goes right out the window when a movie is released.

Disney trashed the entire expanded universe after the acquisition. A lot of it matched up with the old video games tho (old republic etc). This is where most of the really good material is
