the national debt is still rising quickly. the share attributable to the tax bill is only a small slice of the annual deficit. but nonetheless, it all adds up.

we don't have enough space left in the GDP to do that, but trump is coming close regardless. from the treasury department:

https://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/mspd/2017/opds112017.prn

$20,590,392,000,000 total debt outstanding in november 2017.

compared to:

https://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/mspd/2017/opds012017.prn

$19,937,261,000,000 in january, only 10 months beforehand, for an increase of $653,131,000,000 in 10 months, or an annualized gain of almost $800 billion. that's fuckin' terrible any way you look at it. it's not even that much lower than the worst days of obama.

Trump didn't make the budget in 2017 and can't immediately reduce government spending that easily....

But even when you subtract the increase from the tax reform to the decreased amount so far, Trump is increasing it at a slower rate than Obama.

republicans traditionally pledge to REDUCE the national debt, not "increase it at a slower rate." george w. bush pledged during his campaign to cut the national debt by over $2 trillion from its then-record-highs of over $5 trillion.

to make the same proportionate reduction, trump needs to reduce the national debt by over $8 trillion. will he do that?

Okay so because they are not doing exactly what they pledge (which I dispute, they pledge to reduct the deficit which they are doing) that makes it okay for libs to have a complete double standard on this?

And ljl at you putting the impetus on Trump and GOP to reduce the ridiculous debt Obama created. Libs would bitch even more if they actually did what it took to do that.

Basically yall like to have it both ways. You bitch about it if they do something they pledge, then blame them if they don't follow through on a pledge even if it's not something you'd normally support.

“Why, of course, the people don’t want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship…

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

– Hermann Goering

'Merica has been living beyond its means for a long time. Presumably there is some level of debt, relative to our GDP, where creditors start to get nervous. Personally I'd rather not test where that limit is.

no one can or will ever address spending because its so tied to reelections and corporate welfare/lobbyists. there is no scenario in which congress is ever choosing to spend less. thats why you cut off revenue. people are entitled to the money they make.
