when you graduated from college.

My parents: none. They literally thought a liberal arts degree would guarantee immediate employment.

My dad didn't want me to do a finance-related job because he thinks it's a grim grind. Strongly urged me to law instead, which he regarded as more intellectual. Me not doing LS was by far the greatest act of rebellion I ever engaged in but he were pretty chill about it because he was always explicit that he worked hard at his grind of a job in part so that I wouldn't be compelled to do the same thing.

"Rebellion" is overstating it slightly. They weren't mad about me not going or anything, but I was strongly encouraged to do law and me not going was a big surprise to just about everybody.

My dad has a law degree, fwiw.

Not flame, he said something like: "Work is work. There's a good chance that the large portion of time you spend at any job will be unpleasant. Don't fall into the trap of waiting for a career about which you're passionate; just find something that's stable, that pays well enough, and that you can tolerate."

He's a great parent for sure. Part of me wonders whether this particular piece of advice subtly led me to the misery of law when I could have been happier doing something else. But he's probably right; I've listened to interviews where male pornstars complain about all the awful aspects of their jobs.

It would have been good advice if it were 1970s Buffalo, which was the last time he looked for a job:

1. Don't be an engineer. They don't make any money or decisions.

2. Only acceptable majors are business, accounting, finance, etc. (which my college didn't have) -- i.e. look at it as a trade school. "How many jobs are there as an 'historian'?"

3. Only career options are accounting, law, and medicine. He saw nothing else.

4. And the boomer favorite: "You can do anything with a law degree!"

Ah, makes sense then, though I guess it's funny it has to be "hiding money" and not just putting her on a controlled budget or something. I guess the feasibility of being that open would vary from family to family though.

Also, in contrast to XO norms it was my mom who was organized and restrained while my dad is scatterbrained and makes impulse purchases.

By hiding money you're effectively putting wife on a controlled budget but with fringe benefit she doesn't know about the other funds, which may come in handy in bad states of the world. BTW this is another source of value for BTC etc.

That's true, but there are downsides too: You're not having full honest communication with your spouse, she's effectively being manipulated instead of being engaged as a partner, you risk a blowup if the hidden money is discovered in the wrong context, it creates temptation for you (very easy for hidden money to become an escort fund or something), etc.

I don't think I'd do the hiding money option except as a last resort when other methods fail.

my father was blue collar guy with an 8th grade education. He did tell me "just do what your supposed to do, and you wont have any problems." honestly, its not bad advice, and I'm always surprised by the amount of people who trip themselves up because they dont just stop to ask themselves what the fuck they are supposed to be doing.

Other than that, not much. when I started first law job he asked me if I had to punch in. Still, he was a 180 dude so no complaints here.

Definitely. One of the cool things was how proud he is that I'm a lawyer. Most lawyers/professionals i know are constantly stressed that their not living up to their parents. Me, my father literally thinks I could be president.

Me: “maybe I’ll be an accountant like you. Seems like you do well.”

Dad: “Jesus Christ. Don’t be an accountant.”

Me: “Maybe I’ll go to law school.”

Dad: “ Seems like you should get a fucking job.”

Me: “I think I want to quit biglaw and become a prosecutor.”

Dad: “That’s stupid. Just take their money as long as they’ll pay it to you.”

Dad: (when I thought I might get drafted to play pro baseball) “If anyone offers you a contract, just take it, no matter how low it is. This is pretty much your last chance to play ball.”

He got an accounting degree because he heard there were jobs. Never talked about his job. Built house furniture in his free time. I really never thought of him as doing accounting work. Can’t even picture it.

before I graduated college it was "don't be an engineer, go into finance." this was during the bush bonanza years when any moron with a 3.0 in econ could get an ib job. turned out to be awful advice and i graduated into the worst job market in living memory.

after college the advice mostly stopped, ended up going to law school and making an even bigger mistake than my college major choice.

My second uncle once removed gave me some spectacular advice that was completely lost on me until the last couple of years. He told me that the work you do at your job doesn't mean shit, and all that matters is how much you get paid and whether you like who you work with. He was 100% correct.
