my question is about cap gains tax.

if you live in one state and then move midyear, do you still have to pay cap gains tax in the state you left? if so, is it prorated?

what if i move in August to a state with no income tax, and cash out a bunch of investments in September. Do i have to pay tax to my old state?

I suspect they prorated it, at least that's what they did with local taxes when we moved intrastate

Just looked it up. My state says that youre a resident only if you live in state for more than 1/2 the year.

But it also says that anyone earning income in the state has to pay taxes there.

It's still unclear to me whether or not I have to pay prorated capital gains tax here if i move and cash out in another state.

anyone?

U live in state X 5 months, then state Y 7 months. File in X, X taxes u on ur X income. File in Y, Y taxes u on ur X and Y income, but gives u credit for taxes u paid in X.
