You learn there's going to be a Galaxy Battle movie, and you're excited. You buy tickets, you buy popcorn, but as you sit before the screen, something seems off. All of the evil characters are clueless sambos, even though there's nothing in the book to suggest they should be. The heroes are all white slavers, and a major point in the movie is the dignity and nobility of slavers lifting blacks up. Trite Uncle Remus humor pocks the movie--every five minutes, there's a lame pratfall or jape involving Rastee-P.O., a bot embodying all the racist stereotypes you encounter in your daily life. And the climax involves the white slaver protagonist giving his life to save a colony of slaves from ravening abolitionists (depicted as crazy people) who wanted to use them as a political sacrifice, with the hamfisted message that only slaveowners care about black people.

Miffed at your viewing experience (which is of a piece with every single movie you've seen that year) you get on the messageboard and lodge a complaint you would have enjoyed the movie more had it stuck to neutral themes disconnected from the racist tropes of the day. In response, poaster "Oh, You Travel...?" expresses incredulity that you "_really_ let _politics_ dampen your enjoyment of a movie?"

This is compounded because you have tons of movie critics ignoring issues with the actual movie like, oh idk, plot and character development, and instead championing the diverse cast and the use of women in masculine roles.

Compare to the first Star Wars trilogy -- I think you can actually make the argument that Leia was the STRONGEST character, and she was a great Princess and clearly cared for her people, but those decisions were made organically and were part of her character development. Likewise, you never really notice that Lando is black because you know that he wasn't cast just to have a black guy on screen -- he's just a cool character.
