That's why it was a surprise when Taylor took to her Instagram page on Wednesday to write a little message to her fans to celebrate her 28th birthday. "I love you guys so much. This was a photo @paul_sidoti took at @capitalofficial Jingle Bell Ball in London a few days ago. I couldn’t have asked for a better year, all thanks to you," she wrote. "Thanks for all the birthday wishes. Can’t wait to see what 28 will be like. See you on tour."

However, despite the seemingly benign comment, many people on the Internet haven't received her "better year" sentiment kindly — while Taylor may have had a good year winning a court case (and speaking up for survivors of sexual harassment), releasing an album and being named a Time Person of the Year (alongside many other "silence breakers"), 2017 hasn't been a great (or even average) year for a lot of people in the country. "Ya truly what could have gone better in 2017," one Twitter user posted. "I need enough money to buy the privilege to be oblivious to everything," another added. "To be fair, it's been a good year for rich people," a third joked.

Many tweets directly called out the tone-deafness of the singer's message. "I mean, the country is basically in flames, but at least T. Swift is doing alright!" one person noted. Perhaps most damning, though: "I mean, yeah there were Nazis and white supremacy marches, and families are being town apart, and there were mass shootings, and people are losing health care, but none of that affects me, so 2017 was great!"
