One of the interesting parts of the first half of The Secret Of Our Success is a description of some of the insanely elaborate recipes tribal people have for survival. Humans are a questing and risk-taking species; our bolder members try all sorts of things out, and stuff that has an impact gets recorded in cultural memory, and the memories that are useful are likely to be preserved and embellished.

grinding to flour made storage and preservation easier

one day a flour supply got wet, then some woman's nasty cunt yeast that was ambient in the hut caused it to start burbling and growing

the inhabitants did the only reasonable thing - threw it in the fire

then there was bread

they knew heating up stuff sometimes made it softer, more digestible.

Remember, they were eating all kinds of shit, grass, tree bark resin, whatever they thought they could get some nutrition from. So getting things to a point where they could chew it up, put it in their belly--good or bad--- was part of the objective.

I think there was a lot of experimentation by women to make edible that which was not edible. Lots and lots of de husking seeds and mixing spores and things like that.

Lots of observations of birds, wolves, and sampling what they sample too.

Bigger brains means wider ability to gather from the surroundings and make food--which led to bigger brains etc.

cr. The experimentation with cooking food really led to major breakthroughs. It takes a lot less energy to digest cooked food and it killed off parasites.

Olives are another good one. The process to make them edible is crazy complex.

An odd omission is coffee. We figured this one our rather late in the game.

yeah, olives. that's a good one. Basically we'd do whatever the fuck we could to soften stuff up and cram it in our stomach. If we could leech out the bitterness and didn't suffer extremes of stomach distress thereafter, I think we were good to go and had a new food source. Then of course, we'd try to make it taste better.
