The only good thing about big law is you can come and go as you please. I routinely don't show up at the office for days at a time without telling anyone. I haven't been in the office since last Wednesday.

Downside is that you are expected to work on short notice, any day of the week, wherever you are

What if you're so sick you can't even work from home? I went through a period where getting up to eat was a fucking chore that caused me headaches and pain.

There is always someone else who can do it. And if it’s a true emergency then they will respect you more for standing your ground. I mean a bad cold is a bs excuse for something big tho

Got talked to as a summer associate - Being sick is not an option. Jewess partner - "Unless you were in a wreck and are on a hospital bed, calling in sick is unacceptable in biglaw." I am quoting verbatim here. And this is 100% correct.

this has not been my experience at either of my 2 firms. not coming in when sick is standard, and whether you will have to work from home depends on how urgent whatever needs to be done is.

maybe it's different as a litigator where things are often predictable.

Depends on the practice group and work flow. I don't think most people are as blatantly heartless as people ITT are talking about.

But yeah, its not like people say, "I'm sick" and all the partners jump in and just cover your work. If you're lucky and have coverage another associate will do it for you but you're pretty much still responsible for doing all the time sensitive shit, and then the non-time sensitive shit piles up for you when you get back.

If you need to get de-staffed on stuff I'm sure people would do that for you, but keep in mind that means someone has to get staffed to cover you, and you will lose a lot of hours and it may be a month before you get fully staffed again. Long story short you're not working at McDonald's, people can't just fill in for you for a day and you pick up where you left off.

this is right.

i do think most supervisors will at least make an effort to dump less shit on you if youre sick but still wont hesitate to if they have to.
