Surgical subspecialty

Typical OR day is 14 hours, working for at least 13 hours of that. Clinic days are shorter but can be just as long (depending on how long it takes to round before), and you usually get a defined hour break for lunch. When I've been on call (aka you work day, night, day with no intervening stoppage), I've had 40+ hour stretches without sleeping, and 24+ hr stretches without sitting down or eating

majority of the job is outside the OR. in clinic, you might have to see 30 patients to find the one to operate on.

when inpatient, you have to admit people from the ED, handle their daily bullshit medical regimens, berate nurses paging you at 3am for nonsense, write thorough progress notes so a lawyer can't pull a "10 years ago, your note said xy, but my client contends xyZ...", go back and forth with social workers to discharge people to rehab facilities that don't want them, and so on

then as an attending you have the added task of billing, staffing, etc

lol well no one becomes a surgeon because they like clinic. it's a means to end

unethical spine surgeons might operate on a lot more of their patients and stack $$. but obviously very few of those borderline surgeries will be successful, and they'll be dealing with the complications

At my last job, which utterly broke my spirit, it was 10-11. All pure work. Zero breaks. No lunch, no nothing. Every second grueling difficult work. Had to Sprint to use the bathroom. Broken into 2 shifts, started at 5 am. Ended often at 9 pm. Kept piling on more and more work. Nasty managers.Must've violated every labor law in the book. 2 new hires on my team quit in under a week. I made it 6 months before I broke down. Worst job ever. Oh and only one day per week where you didn't have to work at all.

Yes, it was highly depressing. When I finally quit at 6 months, the HR woman from the parent company called me for an exit interview. I told her it was simply an unbearable workload of highly difficult work few can perform well with absolutely no breaks, & the schedule was horrific on top of it all. She sighed, “It’s nothing I haven’t heard before.”

I told her the company I worked for was going to fall apart, because they’re expanding too fast, the workload was already impossible & all the new clients meant even more work on already overburdened employees. Their good workers, like me, were dropping like flies because it was just too much, & it’s really hard to find talented replacements, let alone those who will stay. So their product quality is going to go south & they’re going to keep losing workers. She nervously sighed again, because she knew I was right. They’re fucked.

I later heard almost no one lasts more than 6 months. They just squeeze all they can out of each worker. It’s a mill.

There have been maybe 10 days in the last 5+ years where I actually did work the full day(8-9 hours). The joys of not having to bill being in house.

Rest of the time, I surf the net, lunch, work out, pay bills/household stuff, etc
