Nashville has already been on a slut/TiNA induced spending spree for the past few years as it is (some good, some stupid), the city is literally designed for cars, not that many people even work or live in the downtown area, people don't even use mass transit in the city as it is right now, and the project would include prohibitively expensive digging many stories underground to build a subway (Nashville downtown is basically on a big hill, while other parts are at elevations several stories lower).

You will never have enough roads to meet demand in Manhattan, for example, and most other major cities slide down along that curve. The better roads are the more people use them, until they suck again, and autonomous cars won't change that simple fact. Traffic is always going to be shit in LA.
Surprising thing is that with the exception of NYC, middle and upper middle class Americans seem to stupid to realize that building public transit for the poor keeps them off of the roads, which means less traffic. If these people had any common sense they would realize that roads should be tolled and mass transit built. This will price everyone below them off the roads. |

In NYC especially they will eliminate cars with only one passenger, which are a huge problem, and reduce the amount of time cabs spend driving around looking for passengers and traveling to/from parking. (For example, the phenomenon at 4pm where everyone heads to Queens to change drivers would be eliminated.) The car can drive itself home or to park or to pick up groceries or the kids.This results in more trips, which will admittedly be offset by better driving (rerouting for construction, communicating with other vehicles, etc).
If we assume they are going to be taxis then investment in rail makes even more sense as autonomous cars would solve the last mile problem. Even if everyone uberpools, you aren't going to be able to get enough cars into and out of manhattan at rush hour each day. Rail + Autonomous cars makes the most sense - live in whatever suburb you want and you have a 10 min autonomous ride to a rail station and 30 min into the city. Cars will always be the dominant form of transit outside of high density areas, but in high density areas, we will never be able to accommodate enough cars. |

But for anyone except the wealthy it will not make sense to own a car and pay for its idle time and maintenance when you can distribute that cost across a larger group. Most people drive to commute or shop. Then their car is parked for 22+ hours a day. It makes much more economic sense for the vast majority of people to rent a ride when needed and otherwise not have the expense of ownership.
It will be like Uber but much cheaper and safer and less creepy. You can pay an extra buck for the clean luxe model that isn't fucked up by Joe Public (who might be hesitant to vandalize a car that knows who he is and has him on constant video.) |

I have actually worked on a future-planning consulting project for a major transit agency that dealt with the impact of autonomous vehicles. Their best case scenario is AV will solve the last-mile problem and connect them to the rail system. This is likely overly optimistic. We will be able to fit many more vehicles on the road because they will need much less space between them (a major cause of traffic today). These cars will be able to go at faster speeds and in urban areas congestion will be reduced because up to 30% of all traffic in urban areas is caused by people looking for parking - which will be unnecessary. Autonomous vehicles will also be much more enjoyable than light rail because of likely design changes. You will be able to fully recline and take a nap or get on the Internet in total privacy. So unless they are going to go underground (dumb, expensive) or elevated (ugly, expensive), they should just put the money in bitcoin and wait until self-driving cars fix the traffic problem. |
