All of these were supposed to be palaces of rail transit for the next century, taking millions of passengers to their destinations every year while inspiring civic pride.

Instead, airplanes quickly rendered most of these obsolete within a few decades of their construction. If they're lucky, they have been reused as museums (like the one in Cincinnati). If not, they are slowly crumbling as they serve only a few Amtrak passengers each day.

I think part of the problem is that when we began building big airports after WWII, shitty modern architecture had taken over.

Washington Dulles International Airport, for example, was designed by a famous architect with the intent of being an architectural gem. Unfortunately, that ensured it was a hideous eyesore. Also, security regulations often prevent airports from being used in the way the architect suggested.

But yes, most airports don't even bother to pretend that beauty was a consideration in their design. Dulles is ugly but at least made a misguided effort to look good.

I think the problem with airports from the "golden age" is they were too small to handle modern crowds and all the extensions, annexes and new terminals are pure functional rat mazes.

It is probably the modernist International Style that you have a problem with. Postmodern style, which is basically our current era, is allowed to ahistorically borrow elements of other styles through time - eg it is allowed to use pretty ornaments, or resemble a huge sail, or a series of Chinese boxes.

The mishmashed melange of references that goes on inside a Cheesecake Factory, for example, is postmodern in spirit.

The terminals are stretched out because the tarmac is huge. Imagine making something ornate as the train station halls but fifty times bigger. Its bound to be ugly and utilitarian.

The City of Detroit, from 1920 to the 1990s, can be viewed as a microcosm of American society.

In no other place did the promise true equality come closer to being realized than Detroit in the 1960s, and what did "they" do? They hit.

the decline in intercity rail in the USA has nothing to do with demographic change and everything to do with planes being more efficient over long distances (such as the distance between Kansas City and literally any other major city)

well, we must also consider what (((they))) did to architecture.

they are ugly, inside and out, and so they hate everything beautiful (cf. what they did to art, music, literature, etc. in the 20c).

behold, the work of america's greatest architect:

they did this with street cars in a few places. But the reality is that trains are a poor fit for intercity travel in most of the USA because of the long distances. Planes drank their milkshake.

leipzig

i think most german train stations were bombed to ashes during WWII. very few survived intact. leipzig was one of the lucky ones

Buffalo's NY Cental station was built in 1929. It's Art Deco and was goregeous in its prime. Unfortunately it hasn't been an active station since 1979, and time, snow, "youths," copper thieves, and legit and illegit scavengers have taken their toll. There's been a movement to restore it for 20 years. It's now used for a few events/year, like a beer event. It's too far away from downtown to be reused for anything meaningful.

Inside, unfortunately largely stripped of original details: https://assets2.roadtrippers.com/uploads/poi_gallery_image/image/319747058/-quality_60_-interlace_Plane_-resize_1024x480_U__-gravity_center_-extent_1024x480/poi_gallery_image-image-710c06f0-c6fb-4943-99a0-91835aa10d2f.jpg

Denver's sees use as a transit hub and was recently renovated. It's the center of the booming lodo district, and is filled with restaurants, bars, etc.

Can confirm Denver's is lovely. Terminal Bar is cool in its own right, and Union Station acts as an anchor location for lots of other trendy bars and restaurants in the LoDo district.

Also, the new light rail express line to Denver International Airport, which departs from Union Station, adds function to the station and helps bring the area "back to its roots" as a transit and rail hub.

if i could find the time, i'd like to take a train trip across a large portion of the country. it's crazy expensive though, and it takes for fucking ever.

when anthony bourdain went to Detroit and hung out with that squirrely guy in the Packard Plant, it was a real bummer to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpF8eZ3bPqE
