Brian Wilson used a bunch of weird gimmicky instruments like a Theremin on Pet Sounds. but not to any genius effect. it's not like every band thereafter was using a theremin or glockenspiels and sleigh-bells. it just sounds try-hard and forced. as for their 'Surf Rock' phase, you have to be joking that that is any way 'revolutionary' or something. it's just a bunch of Chuck Berry ripoffs with those gay, overrated harmonies -- the Beach Boys were not even good at harmonies; The Byrds, Beatles, Hollies, CSN, all blow them away, way more distinctive and innovative. |
