Just do years of catchy chart-topping songs about how much you like surfing, followed by dropping Pet Sounds and being proclaimed geniuses

any other transformations like this in pop music history?

nada surf i guess went from mid-90's meme-grunge-pop band to critical acclaim in the early-00's. ween, to some extent, started being "taken seriously" after the mollusk. ministry went from europop-goth in 1983 to land of rape and honey by 1987. pantera went from 80's hair metal like "ride my rocket" to cemetery gates/etc. by the end of the 80's.

it's not like pop music and truly great and groundbreaking songwriting/performance/production are mutually exclusive. they were good when they were just a gimmick act controlled by a label and they were even better when they matured and Brian Wilson was able to fully expand his talent. it's a much better trajectory than them starting out as artistic savants and then degenerating into a mercenary commercial outfit.

I make no judgement of the Beach Boys, I only note that their trajectory seems so unusual as to be comical

but the Beach Boys 'masterpiece' wasn't even *that* great

'God Only Knows' is a very good song, but pound for pound, it's not any better than, say, 'Never My Love' by The Association, or other pop songs.

the Beach Boys just get a cult status because OMG, BRIAN WILSON IS SUCH A 'CRAZY GENIUS', AND HE DID WEIRD SHIT LIKE LIE IN HIS BED FOR 2 YEARS! KEWL! SO KOOKY AND UNEXPECTED!

songs like "surf's up" or "don't talk" were genuinely DIFFERENT than other pop songs at the time, though.

I prefer the Beach Boys songs about how they like surfing and would like to go surfing, but it's undeniable that white rock critics consider Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made, or at the very least an extremely important and consequential album that is to be revered.

I am relatively uninterested in debating whether or not those critics were correct.

they were ahead of their time. they might be somewhat critically overrated due to all the Brian Wilson tortured genius worship, but they were still damn good. people who pick apart pop culture for a living acknowledged it then and they acknowledge it now. some contrarian faggot would love to be the one who 'took down those flame beach boys' but it has never happened. those albums are legitimately good and they were borderline visionary at the time. it was cutting edge shit that held tremendous popular appeal. you're taxing them for being able to briefly achieve greatness.

they were not that visionary. you guys are ridiculous.

wherein? Brian Wilson used a bunch of weird gimmicky instruments like a Theremin on Pet Sounds. but not to any genius effect. it's not like every band thereafter was using a theremin or glockenspiels and sleigh-bells. it just sounds try-hard and forced.

as for their 'Surf Rock' phase, you have to be joking that that is any way 'revolutionary' or something. it's just a bunch of Chuck Berry ripoffs with those gay, overrated harmonies -- the Beach Boys were not even good at harmonies; The Byrds, Beatles, Hollies, CSN, all blow them away, way more distinctive and innovative.

you might be 100% right - but the mainstream view is different.

I'm just saying, isn't it funny that the Beach Boys went from a gimmicky band that was all like "I enjoy surfing, surfing is a thing I would like to do more of" to a band that was hailed as visionary by multiple generations of critics?

Sort of similar to what the Beatles did.

Best modern example I can think of is Radiohead, only they did it after only one catchy pop hit/album.
