The two Orthodox Jews from Brooklyn launched their enterprise in 2008, during the sinkhole of the recession, buying other people’s cards online for a few dollars less than their value, reasoning many people would rather have $89 in cash than $100 worth of stuff from Annie Sez. They then sell cards for a few dollars more than they paid for them, but less than face value. Today, netting an estimated 8% profit, CardCash is on track to gross $120 million by year-end.

On its own, Gift Cards are an unbelievable and wildly profitable business. Insanely profitable. The major company that does a lot of Gift Cards got bought out this week by PE - I had been eyeing it for years but it never got low enough for me.

Basically when you buy a gift card you give an interest free loan to the Gift Card company until the funds are drawn down, which then can be reinvested into money market or treasuries. In addition to this interest free loan, after a certain point Gift Cards used to either expire or run-off, representing direct profit to the issuer.

Truly one of the hidden life-hacks, a float business in the modern world. A modern day Blue Chip Stamps

The real fraud are those Amex/VISA gift cards that cost $5 to activate. So the purchaser pays $105 for the $100 card. Then Amex/VISA still get their typical fees at the point of sale when the gift card is used. ljl
