Depends on the dealership.

Most luxury dealerships are pretty laid back.

A lot of mass market brands can be shitty about test drives if they think it's a special car.

Kia Stinger. It's a Porsche Panamera for 1/2 the price. To the extent is gives up anything to the Porsche it's the dual clutch but in 9 tenths of driving this torque converter unit is going to be indistinguishable because it's a 180 torque converter. The electric shifter is a bit on an acquired taste but every car is going to electric shifters so just accept it.

Ask for the dealership’s invoice to see what they paid for the car and then ask what points they get on a buy back - usually they get 2-4%. That’ way you know what their profit will be. Make an offer that gives them a little profit on the car and don’t haggle them too much on trade in value, a lot of dealerships make their cash in the trade ins.

I love car shopping. I like to go on the test drive just to listen to the salesman say his canned lines and set up his negotiations, usually they are totally transparent. There are very few people that are actually skilled at sales.

As for cars, there are pretty much all the same.

Why don’t you look at a mid sized pickup? You’re a cool guy, get a real dad car.

I’d make an appt, somebody at a manager level. otherwise they just stick whoever is available on you and they have to run every single thing by their boss. Also when it comes to price negotiation time, wait closer to month end when they’re desperate to make sales targets and will sell car at a loss. That’s the only way to get a bunch below invoice.

It’s not the only way.

Easiest way is Costco. That ends up pretty close to the best deal around. Or get on the relevant forum and people will tell you what dealer gives the best deal period.

Truecar is helpful to get a sense of the range that you can expect to pay but all dealers will match the truecar guaranteed price even if they’re not a true car dealer and some will offer to beat it.

I went through the Costco program and the dealer was 30 miles away and they kept wanting me to go in before they talked price. I told them no way, don’t waste my time, I want everything over email and gave me a price and I emailed 5-6 dealers closer to me and they could all either match or beat the price. Maybe it’s a better deal elsewhere but that wasn’t my experience.

Edmunds car forums is how I found a specific guy to contact for a certain deal that was way below invoice, but that’s hard to replicate when I don’t know what market he is in. I’ve also found edmunds helpful for base money factor for leasing but doesn’t look like OP is looking to lease.

The internet is your friend. For instance, for Toyota’s there is a website called Toyota nation where they have forums for each model, region of country, and trim level and what people pay. People get crazy deals. I got my mom $1100 under invoice for her civic. It’s tough negotiating the low margin cars since you don’t have all that much wiggle room. I told 3 dealers, here’s my offer. Sure enough, one of them calls me on the last day of the month and accepts. You need to pit all the dealers against one another to give you the best deal.

Thanks. The advice I see most frequently is to call a bunch of dealerships and demand the "internet price", then use the lowest offer you get as a negotiation tool with the others.
