God is whatever it is that underlies reality that we will never understand, the groundwork that makes your mind possible that science will never know. It's the unknown and the unknowable that we worship because we're limited creates in an infinite world. It's a heuristic for what we'll never understand until, hopefully, we die and meet our maker.

You're looking at all this wrong.

The purpose of religion is social cohesion, raising children to be moral people, and an institution that handles some of the most difficult human events (death, marriage, charity during poverty, etc.). The question of whether there actually is a God or not is really secondary and as one person put it to me, if there is no God then so what? The Church still provides tremendous value to millions of people. That said, joining a religion to try to find God and therefore meaning seems like a fruitless endeavor to me.

no. the problem is that I'm too high iq to believe in a higher being/creator but im not low iq enough to think life still has meaning without one, and that it isn't causing all kinds of existential problems for me. but i'm not high iq enough to set aside reason, recognize its limits and take a leap of faith. I'm thinking I might need to take some DMT to boost my iq to start believing in god

for an actual old Christian philosopher/mystic, try Meister Eckhart. I like that he typically speaks of God in "apophatic" language, meaning by negation ("God is NOT this or that"). Also sees through the dualism of Nothing/One and All. God is essentially both.

I agree that we are generally built for belief, but I have managed to get my mind into such a space where its difficult to convince myself to believe, and I haven't believed for so long that I don't see belief as part of my identity. now that I have realized how important belief is, I feel like I'm permafucked and can't change for the better
