i don't think it's even taught anymore in the formal sense. people don't actually realize that "poems" are not just fractured paragraphs. many "poems" are just poorly-formatted chunks of text and don't actually represent anything poetic.

yeah; it just lacks structure and therefore lacks meaning. "poetry" used to be taught like a formal discipline, with textbooks. you'd have to learn about meter and rhyme-schemes and about literature in general, and about the elements of greco-roman mythology that crop up repeatedly in western poetry, and so on. in other words, formal stuff that you had to memorize and recite on tests. not just "write what you feel." it was considered laughable that someone would actually attempt to WRITE poems without a working understanding of what they actually were.

I think it's because "free verse" isn't quite as free as a lot of people think it is. There's still certain stylistic and metrical elements to it that have to be observed. It's not just prose with random line breaks/pauses

exactly. free verse is fine if its written by someone like t.s. eliot who knows what they are doing. awful if it is written by some shitlib who just litters random phrases and punctuation across a page

there was a famous textbook example about the meaning of a "poem" involving a bit of text from a late-1800's geometry guide. someone discovered that one of the book's sentences could be formatted so that it followed the same rhyme-scheme as "in memorium" by tennyson:

"And hence no force, however great,

Can draw a cord, however fine,

Into a horizontal line

Which shall be absolutely straight."

that's the same meter as:

"I hold it true, whate'er befall;

I feel it when I sorrow most;

'Tis better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all."

but yet, the geometry text is not really a "poem." it could plausibly be part of a larger poem, but by itself, it's not very meaningful, because it lacks a grander narrative.

The geometry sentence has its own intended elegance...the sounds and succinctness appealed to the author without altogether knowing why.

actual poets usually treated poetry like a job. they didn't just scribble something down and run with it. even a very skilled, intelligent guy like keats would supposedly revise a single line 50+ times to get it right before offering stuff for publication.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man --

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began --

That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,

And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire --

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins

When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins

As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn

The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
