Very expensive membership - often 40K buy ins plus 1500 a month fees
Golf is TTT and doesn't make you fit. Most amateur golfers are obese.
Country club food tastes like trash and is expensive
So what's the appeal

networking
invites to prestigious clubs like yacht clubs or squash gyms
edit : no women allowed. this is worth any amount of 'money'.

oh you're going to a shitty club i think, and it will vanish when those olds don't exist to keep the club running with their $
it's a bigly known problem in the country club industry, which apparently has industry publications and shit
clubs across the country been adding family friendly shit so gen x will actually join instead of going "oh but what do i do with my kids" like they were doing last decade en masse

This + wanting your kids to be around other kids whose parents are members v. hanging out at the town/city pool in the summer, playing video games with neighbors or whatever kids actually do now, etc.
Country clubs were pretty popular in Buffalo -- every family who could belonged to one, whether it was the $50k places or the $1k zoos.
In CA it's lol -- initiation is $250k+ on the Peninsula and they obviously aren't even close to being on the radar for any peers.

yeah, when you're some autistic NOWAG I'm sure it is terrible
or I can be outside in a gorgeous private environment for 4-5 hours with 3 or 4 fellow 30-something bros who all have substantial disposable income, blow and booze flowing freely, crashing the golf cart on purpose, acting like a jackass, and sloppily hitting on the cute drink cart girls with no consequences
in other words, an experience a bowlcut autist like you will never have.

Most people agree with OP which is why outside of the elite clubs, most of them are in decline. Even the elite ones are getting grayer. The new blood is also tends to be more johnny boombatz.
I could definitely see the appeal back in the old days. Large, fun cocktail parties with bland food were the thing. People had a lot of time to get good at golf. Your firm or your company made sure you looked respectable on the course. Other fitness activities (b-ball, soccer, running, weightlifting) weren't as popular and modern home entertainment wasn't available, so guys hung out at the club to fill their time.

Most people feel that way because they can't afford it.
The ones who can afford it but don't join just don't play golf, otherwise they would. Any WASP sees the appeal.
Also your confusing not joining with agreeing with OP.
I don't join Crossfit but I understand the appeal.

i don't know wtf was going on in 1990 but either 5M ppl started playing golf then quit the next year or they fucked up the calculation.
Golf is still recovering from the Tiger Woods, the housing bubble, ITE and millennial faggotry but it's silly to say that the trends in the years following all of that will continue indefinitely. people aged 30-39 is still one of, if not the largest cohort of golfers, despite that many of them had their lives upended by ITE.

As usual, you're mostly talking out of your ass. Public courses have gotten better and way too many were built during the golf/real estate bubble so people simply have more and cheaper options now if they want to play golf.
There are other factors like millennials being more interested in sticking things in their asses than playing golf or ppl working too much. Also, ITE was a big factor... ppl dropped memberships and never came back and younger ppl were too busy being unemployed and drowning in debt to even consider taking up golf.
either way, there still are more golfers now than there were 30 years ago.

I grew up playing summers in high school but LJL at my golf game since then dude
Outside of a couple fraternity golf scrambles in college and the occasional round during a bachelor party I've probably gone proper golfing like 4 times since
There's no chance I wouldn't embarrass myself playing next to any decent golfer

maybe. i feel like they are being judged on different standards though.
with skiing, you're viewing it as a recreational pursuit, where you just get down the mountain and have fun.
but golf you're viewing as play in relation to par.
if you were viewing skiing as competently completing a GS course or something, idk how far apart they'd be in difficulty.

If you grew up around it and like golf, it's 180. People with kids really like it too. You can take them there and they'll be safe, can run around, take lessons, then you get to zone out for a while around similarly situated adults. I imagine it's a godsend for some people.
I hate all the local network shit but if you're multigenerational in the same area, country club membership will actually lead to a better career and more opportunities for many people. Also it's just nice to retreat into a social bubble with some regularity. The guys who are steaming mad about the state of the world feel that way because they don't have any respite from GC horrors and their prole comfort-seeking lifestyles. If you're 53 years old with older kids who hate you and still grinding a demanding job to pay for them, you'll be damn grateful for your idiot golf buddies at the club and the ability to get away from your fat demon of a wife.
Agreed on the food but most people aren't eating there all the time except for the grandparents. Being able to drink at the bars and then just mindlessly pay your tab monthly is one of the best-worst parts.

i primarily just associate with jews, turds and asians now
but back in the day, yes. most of the equestrian doodettes and doods were all non jew whites
my non-jew white family own a ranch with horsey doods, which is how i got into riding

some are dopey, but like with all animals, it depends on the horse
they each have distinct personalities and different breeds behave differently
horsey doods are 180 and riding is a lot of fun
i wouldn't mind being a rancher tbh

"horses are legitimately some of the dumbest animals around."
you're fucking retarded, and it's lol that you cite the SHIT as your reason
horses, unless almost every other animal, actively avoid stepping in shit, and they will spread their legs wide just to avoid pissing on themselves
dogs piss on their legs and eat their own shit and don't give a fuck
horses >>>>> dogs

Not WASP at all - more like redneck ranch owners with a long history of farming/ranching.
they do cattle ranching too, etc.
they may be wealthy, but are more into sports like shooting, riding, etc.

Not that I would ever join one but:
1) enjoy nice shit without having to deal with proles
2) less traffic on the golf course(s) which typically are of higher quality than public courses
3) networking and business development
4) belonging to an "elite" community (related to 3)

Status. I was on my HS' golf team and had access to the local country club for practices. It was a nice course and while we had to wait for the twilight hours, there were always plenty of UMC dudes trying to impress and peacock either on the course or in the lounge.
They'd complain about our HS team playing on there, except that the biggest dick in the club had his son on our team. We were always required to let members play through, which sucked. Some of them were atrocious, which normally meant we'd only get in like 3 holes and some driving range practice.

i'd prefer a social club that was like a country club but specifically excluded golf. something that had a similar type club house and offered squash and tennis, skeet shooting, swim, events, etc.
my biggest issue with a golf club is that i'd be basically subsidizing the constant play by boomers. yeah i could get a social membership, but still.

There'd be some who golf more sporadically. But yeah you'd definitely come off as a beta bitch.
The thing is, most people who want all the other things you mentioned are going to want to golf if they are decent at it at all.
That's why what you want rarely exists

It'll be good for the industry.
Everyone will consolidate back to the good golf centric historic clubs once the shitty new ones are gone
There are plenty of millenials and gen x'ers that play to support them

I'm shocked so many people here are defending this shit. Country clubs seem like they are fucking relics from another time. The average age of members has to be late 60s and maybe even pushing 70?
Paying money every month for the privilege to eat at the equivalent of the restaurant in a Hyatt to "be seen" seems incredibly antiquated.

Cuz it's usually because the person sucks or never learned. Its very difficult if you didn't grow up playing and that's understandably annoying.
But I guarantee you if you could go shoot in the 80's you'd enjoy it.
People also go out of their way to unnecessarily bash golf, kind of like soccer(which I admittedly hate).

1) exclusive access to nice amenities like golf, pool, dining. No lines, crowds of proles etc.
2) social connections. a lot of the value is socializing with other well connected, wealthy people in your area.
