you're comparing popular music with prestige tv, which isn't a fair comparison.

most of the most popular tv shows are unimaginably shitty, just like the most popular music is shitty.

prestige tv is more comparable to less well-known music for people with decent taste

Music industry’s core product got decimated overnight and rather than adapting they decided to fight the future and eventually got their shit pushed in by tech companies that didn’t give a fuck about music and just saw it as a 17th revenue stream/test case for their software (Apple) or a platform to sell ads and shitty little subscriptions (pandora, Spotify, YouTube etc).

Meanwhile TV had their main appliance become awesome (CRT -> HDTVs) and used that to create a new revenue model that paired perfectly with 21st century losers who want to never leave their houses and then figured out mobile and also got a huge subsidy from the government in the form of net neutrality. Then all the talent flocked to the new model and it created a virtuous circle.

I'm watching Everything Sucks on Netflix and it's basically a giant ode to the 90s and the music is 180 and I'm just thinking what will they do when they make shows about the 00s and have absolutely zero music worth a shit to play. It's going to be very sad. Also fashion has basically been static as fuck since 2004 and there have been no 180 fads. Biggest change was the move from three button to two button suits in like 2008.

the move back to 60s-style suits feels like it's been going on for 10 years
