One student wrote: "I disagree that hate speech should be allowed. For example, someone saying they favor conservative economics should be allowed although I disagree with it, but something like saying you think undocumented people should be deported should not be allowed because the lives of these people aren't negotiable and this rhetoric endangers undocumented students who attend colleges as well." |

he was also banned from the chat there for extremely doobsian behavior, and then he spammed the chat constantly for several days straight out of revenge until it became unusable
all while spamming the board itself for a couple of years
he repeatedly apologized for his spamming, said he couldn't help himself because of his mental illness, begged for help with his mental illness, and then kept spamming, until IP tracked and IP banned repeatedly (VPNs make that more difficult)
this guy is doobs and JJC together, except MUCH more mentally ill
he did this there 18 hrs a day every day for a couple of years

I tell them right off the bat that this isn't debate class, that their political views won't help them with the coursework, and that the classroom is like a little laboratory and they are the detached scientists. Keep it simple and avoid essay topics that generate political opinions. Honestly, they are terrible writers and researchers so making the essay assignments like book reports is better. They don't need a platform to speak. They need to practice reading, writing, and citing.
If you have class discussions that might turn political, have each person who speaks argue the other side at least once. Keep things light (for instance, sometimes I use photos of myself and siblings from the 90's in my powerpoints and go off on some tangent about the 80's-90's that gets them all laughing).
Some young kids have dumb and radical opinions. I'd say that almost all of the radical SJW and alt-right talk comes straight from online/reddit talking points, and not from other classes or professors. I had one guy (hispanic-white 1st gen from chile, wore a bun, trumpmo but self-described "anarchist" lol) who was spouting stuff that almost had me convinced he posted here. He referenced Evola and once started going off on some tangent about race and iq (dead serious). He wasn't a poster, he was merely repeating the packaged ideology he found online. These kids just spend too much time online where they can bypass the institutional gatekeepers of knowledge and embrace some crap that makes them feel like revolutionaries. They are not bad kids.
On the whole I don't think they are any worse than previous generations. If anything, they seem nicer, better behaved and more understanding of each other than when I went to school. Maybe more child-like. Grading stuff sucked (it's the same fucking thing over and over again, lol). But lecturing and leading class discussions was a lot of fun. |
