Amazon tags certain reviews with "Verified Purchase" even if the item has been returned or if the purchaser has been refunded. For example, https://i.imgur.com/2jmzSVX.png (I was refunded for the item). This practice is deceptive, but is Amazon liable?

on second thought, why is deceptive? wouldnt a reasonable consumer expect verified purchase to mean someone actually bought the thing, not that they kept it? wouldnt a reasonable consumer think that someone who gave a shitty review might have returned the item?

a reasonable consumer would think that a review tagged with "Verified Purchase" was written by someone with skin in the game. it'd be interesting to see how many positive reviews are from people who returned the product, which I suspect happens very often.

it'd almost seem more deceptive if they pulled reviews for people who genuinely returned products.

i think the issue is more that if you could establish people dont have skin in the game and abuse the system and intentionally dont have skin in the game.

The problem is that Amazon's "Verified Purchase" badge is misleading. Here's how they define it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/community-help/amazon-verified-purchase and https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=help_search_1-1?ie=UTF8&nodeId=202076110&qid=1519244993&sr=1-1

is it misleading? the purchase was genuine and intended to be so at the time the review was made

wait, if you bought the product and tried it, you should be able to post (and I should be able to read) your review. i don't care if you then returned the item.

What if you bought the item, rated it 5 stars, and then returned it? How is that any different than reviewing the item without purchasing it? Here's how a 5-star review of a product I returned appears: https://i.imgur.com/MvCkriq.png -- note that the item was returned and the refund was completed on January 29th.

The fact is that the Verified Purchase badge creates two kinds of reviews. A reasonable consumer is led by Amazon to believe that reviews tagged with the Verified Purchase badge are more reliable. If Amazon tags certain reviews with the Verified Purchase badge, then it's deceptive not to disclose whether the item was returned/refunded.

maybe they should just remove anything below a 4 star rating if it's been returned?
