I used to live in atx in the late 90's / early 00's, but it's obviously changed a lot (heard Ruby's shut down last week). Pre-SXSW so shouldn't be too insane. Do any of the local posters have any particular bars or restaurants I should check out when I'm back? Staying at the JW, so right downtown.

my recommendation is just don't go. i lived in austin in the 2000s and i still have family there. every time i visit, i'm more overwhelmingly depressed with sadness and despair about how thoroughly the bougie cali shitlibs have fucking ruined it. just hold on to the memories of what it used to be and take a trip to san antonio instead

I went to HS with a Rackspace founder, so SA would actually be a ton of fun because he basically has the keys to the city (actually, he may have received a key to the city...), but Austin is a must this time since it's for an annual "alt" investors meeting that's a bit 'fight club'ish in terms of the membership and relative secrecy/exclusivity. I sent CSLG an invite (I was allowed 1 invite to extend) for him or whoever he thought might be good to distribute to, but didn't hear back, so going solo.

I have no sway, I'm only invited because I co-invested with the fund (I'm not an LP), and I don't have quite the net worth to be a member of the club that a lot of the LP's belong to. I'm hoping after my last company IPO's I'll hit that wealth # to join.

it's literally an incestuous circle of the same owners and pitmasters using each other's recipes and the bbq is literally the same. you're delusional or swayed by the hype and the "experience" if you think you could tell the difference on a blind taste test. la barbecue has better sides (tiebreaker) so they win.

I have a strong sauce preference for the OG Mueller's BBQ sauce (the one with the big chunks of onion and a shitload of pepper) from their place that was on Manor back in the day, and the Franklin's sauce is an exact replica, but La B's is not. I have it on good authority that Franklin is actually the key figure from the old Mueller's store who came up with it. And I would argue objectively it's the greatest brisket-optimized sauce ever created. You're right that the quality of the meat is likely much more dependent on how good a brisket they managed to find when they went to buy than anything else in terms of smoking technique or rub. But I have had consistently better experiences at Franklin's, which could be pure coincidence or could be a result of something they're actually doing differently when they buy. In any case, both definitely beat the shit out of Ruby's, which was itself a delicious spot by late 90s/early 00s standards.

good list. Half Step is on Rainey, and I'd add Blackheart on Rainey, as well, if you're on the street. Those two bars play great music on weeknights.

Could also add some food on the east side, like Bufalina or Old Thousand, or bars like Ah Sing or Whisler's, for some hipster stuff.

Trudy's - TexMex. Fried/stuffed avocado is a common favorite.

East 6th - Younger touristy bars. The more east you are the more ghetto they get.

West 6th - Young professional type bars

Rainey - Retrofitted houses turned into bars. Live music, outdoor areas, sangria. Go on a Sunday that's bright/sunny/warm.

Perry's - Small chain but I believe the Austin location was the original. Go on a Friday and you can get a $12 pork chop meal that would normally be like $35.

Franklin - Classic and well known. Only worth it if you have buddies to go with.

There's also fast casual stuff like Torchy's Tacos and Verts that's good.

Trudy's Mexican Martini's almost got me a DUI once! Fucking APD would stake that place out.

6th street composition sounds similar to what I remember.

The rest all new to me, wish I was staying that Friday for what sounds like a 180 pork chop deal.

Most ghetto part of 6th now BY FAR is "dirty 6th" which is the main stretch between Congress or so and 35. It's more seedy and feels like Bourbon Street Junior now, though there are some cool places tucked in the side streets and the like. But East 6th is Austin's answer to Silverlake or Williamsburgh. West 6th is chill, fratty ex-frat/soror and feels the most like the old 6th St. to me.
