In the lib world, it is signal that you do not have to listen to the speaker at all. Meaning, that person or group is not allowed to engaged in the debate, and you are free (actually you must) ignore them completely. So say the following represented the entire possible range of ideas that could be discussed or debated: [_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _Ideas_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _]
Organizations such as SLPC want to exclude "hate" and "bigotry" from the debate entirely, so that the forum for the exchange of ideas looks like this:
Bigots_ _ _ _[_ _ _ _ Ideas_ _ _ _]_ _ _ _Hate
This is the idea behind the "list." It lets everyone know who is to be excluded, and also is of course a mechanism for public shaming, doxxing, etc, to suppress and intimidate those people from uttering their ideas at all.
They don't put Antifa on the list because they want the Antifa message inside the brackets so it can be discussed. |
